  • Goedhuis, December 2022

The family holding is a substantial 1.5 hectares in a wonderful location within the Chambolle Musigny sector of the appellation. The natural sweetness and richness in volume made this vineyard the perfect candidate to have 15% whole bunches and go through its élevage in 80% new oak. A voluptuous style, showing off excellent ripeness of brooding dark berry fruits. Silky in texture, glycerol and layered dark forest flavours. The graceful tannins sit comfortably below the volume of fruit and a sensation of toasted oak spice provides an added attraction and nuance.

  • Neal Martin, January 2023, Score: 92-94

The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is matured in 80% new oak with 15% whole bunches. It has a relatively light nose for this climat (though in keeping with several others encountered.) Fine delineation, nicely focused but just missing a bit of sensuality. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, moderate weight, pretty red berry fruit laced with desiccated orange peel and marmalade, gentle and harmonious on the finish. Fine. Drink 2025-2045. 92 - 94 points.

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2022, Score: 93-95

A medium deep crimson in colour. The nose suggests a fair weight of fruit but does not quite want to give it up. Complete, though, on the palate with that Chambolle/Morey dichotomy that adds an earthy weight to Bonnes Mares. A little iron rich touch too. Rather satisfying. The small admixture of whole bunches adds complexity. Drink from 2027-2034.

They have an embarrassment of riches within their armoury of four 1ers Crus and six exceptional Grands Crus, culminating with plots of both Clos de Bèze and Le Musigny. They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.Read less
