Violet, Morello cherry and rosemary and sage scents lead to a saline, stony, mineral rich yet firm palate. This is a complex Brunello of the highest order and an outstanding example of the vintage.

    The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Montosoli is impossible to ignore. It opens with a distinctly savory bouquet of ashen stones, rosemary, dusty violets and crushed blackberries. Elegant in style, it floods the palate with polished red berry fruits, violet tones and silken textures. The 2021 tapers off harmoniously with excellent length, leaving edgy tannins to pinch the cheeks as nuances of sour cherry fade. This is an understated yet deeply complex beauty, and easily one of the wines of the vintage. Drink 2028-2044

    The Canalicchio di Sopra 2021 Brunello Vigna Montosoli is absolutely gorgeous, starting with its beautiful aromas of violet, lavender, Mediterranean scrub, perfumed berry and sandalwood. Elegantly structured and showing great intensity, the savory palate delivers succulent Marasca cherry, wild raspberry, licorice and blood orange underpinned by mint and saline minerality. Tightly woven, velvety tannins and fresh acidity keep it impeccably balanced. Drink 2031-2041. Abv: 14.5%

The wineries grapes are grown on two very different terrains here, each with different soil types and exposures that provide different characteristics to the Brunello. The grapes from the more warmly exposed Montosoli site give the Brunello excellent richness, concentration and structure whilst those from Canalicchio provide elegance, minerality and finesse. In 2013 it was deemed necessary, due to the cooler nature of the vintage, that 60% of the grapes came from the warmer Montosoli site to add the perfect balance. One of the original 12 members of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino, Canalicchio di Sopra’s Brunello is one of the finest produced in the north east zone of Montalcino.Read less

Region

Montalcino

Located southwest of Chianti, Montalcino came into its own in the late 1880s when local producer,Biondi-Santi, discovered a Sangiovese clone in his vineyard that was darker in colour than the rest. Its colour, however, was not its only attribute. It produced a wine with notable body, structure and length. He named it ‘brunello' meaning little dark one. This grape's genetic properties along with Montalcino's relatively temperate climate combine to create a wine stylistically different to that of more northerly Chianti. They are usually released approximately 5 years after the vintage following 2 to 4 years ageing in wood. The denomination of Riserva indicates a wine usually produced with more concentrated grapes than the traditional cuvéeand requires a minimum of one additional year of ageing.Today, Montalcino has become one of the most sought after appellations in the Tuscan region.
