  • Goedhuis, December 2022

Lying at the top of the Clos just below the Château, in a parcel called “des Papes” reputedly reserved for the Popes of Avignon, the Drouhin Laroze hectare of vines is one of the very best positioned in Clos de Vougeot. Aged 80% in new oak, but with its natural tannic concentration Nicolas decided to destalk all the fruit this year. With coriander and smoky spiced aromatics, this shows off the powerful tension typical of Clos Vougeot. Aloof in style, with muscle and forgiving sweetness of oak at the end. A multi-layered wine.

  • Neal Martin, January 2023, Score: 93-95

The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a lively bouquet with quite expressive red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit laced with graphite and light pain d'épices aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, fresh and quite vibrant, a dash of white pepper with a tensile finish. This is very appealing and should age well in bottle. Drink 2025-2048.

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2022, Score: 92-95

No whole bunches were used in the Clos, which is as usual. Their plot is very well sited in Plante de l’Abbaye and Quartier du Marei Haut. A concentrated mid red purple, with a suggestion of power behind. Red fruit with a darker edge is prolific on the palate, leading through to light tannins at the finish, with a sense of discreet energy. A well-balanced example. Drink from 2027-2034.

They have an embarrassment of riches within their armoury of four 1ers Crus and six exceptional Grands Crus, culminating with plots of both Clos de Bèze and Le Musigny. They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.Read less
