An inviting nose – red fruits and creamy notes, spiced character and crushed blackberry. Super-structured with a core of black fruit, graphite, spice and liquorice. Dense and tightly wound, this wine will age extremely well. Plenty of acidity and tension – layered. Drink 2032-2045.

While all the Hermitage releases here are beautiful wines, if I had to pick one. it would be the 2021 Ermitage L'Ermite, which comes from a later, cooler terroir of decomposed granite (and even a touch of limestone). As with the other releases here, it was destemmed, and this cuvée will see 18 months in 25% new French oak. Violets, crushed stone, liquid smoke, leather, and assorted darker, almost blue fruits emerge on the nose, and it's medium to full-bodied and has a laser-like focus on the palate, with fine yet building tannins. There's a certain old school-like vibrancy and structure here, and it's going to warrant 3-5 years of bottle before showing some accessibility. The alcohol levels for all three of the single vineyard Hermitage are between 13.5% and 13.8%. I would expect all of these to have 20-25 years of prime drinking.

In 1879, the distant ancestor Polydor Chapoutier was the first to begin to buy vines, thus moving from the status of wine-grower of an estate to that of a viticulturist, a wine producer and a businessman. Seven generations later, we find Michel, forty something, with a real passion for the expression of soils, at the head of this exceptional vineyard. This young, determined man has succeeded in combining the past with daring and creativity. Michel took the domaine entirely biodynamic and eschews the use of cultured yeasts. His favoured approach is to avoid the use of press wine.Read less

Region

Hermitage

Hermitage is a region that produces both red and white wines. Its famous red is made from 100% Syrah while the white is produced from Marsanne and/or Roussanne. A sweeter and very rare white wine is also produced from grapes that have been dried on straw before being pressed. A slighter warmer micro-climate enables Hermitage's red wines to have more ripeness and structure than Côte Rôtie which adds additional power and longevity. As a result, they are usually the most ‘masculine' styled reds in all of the northern Rhône.
