  • Goedhuis, December 2022

This Premier Cru owes its name to the Prior of the Abbaye de Cluny. The monastery historically owned all the great Gevrey Chambertin vineyards. Nicolas likes to give this vineyard a little more new oak, than his other Premiers Crus, going up to as much as 60%, which it fully supports. Georgian brick red, with a whole bunch wild alpine fruit scent. Densely concentrated and a tightly entwined tannic core which depletes as an enthralling degree of sweet Pinot fruit flavours evolves and offers the final lingering sensation. A total beauty.

  • Neal Martin, January 2023, Score: 92-94

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur 1er Cru is blended with 60% new oak and 15% whole bunches. This was showing some reduction on the nose though there seems to be ample fruit here that will come out after racking. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, fresh and winsome, pure red berry fruit and that essence of Pinoté on the finish. Excellent. Drink 2025-2040.

  • Burghound, January 2023, Score: 89-92

A mentholated top note is present on the restrained, fresh and cool aromas of red and black cherry laced with enough earth character to mention. The equally refined but punchier medium weight flavors exude a discreet minerality that adds a sense of lift to the more structured, powerful and youthfully austere finish. There’s slightly more depth here but it’s also sufficiently strict that this will certainly need at least some patience. Drink 2031+

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2022, Score: 90-93

10% whole bunch vinification and 60% new wood. Another of the reductive bouquets, with medium depth of colour. This time the fruit has more of a raspberry inflection, nicely balanced, with good length. Clos Prieur is never very demonstrative but has a fine-boned profile. Drink from 2025-2031.

They have an embarrassment of riches within their armoury of four 1ers Crus and six exceptional Grands Crus, culminating with plots of both Clos de Bèze and Le Musigny. They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.Read less

Region

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
