  • Goedhuis, December 2022

From vines planted in the 60s and 70s, this is a super representation of the appellation of Mercurey. Shining purple colour, layered autumnal bramble fruits. A full, rich and mouthcoating style. The tannins are broad and fine, and it finishes juicy and sweet.

While I like Tupinier-Bautista’s white (above), I did not expect to fall for the entry-level red, too. With decent juiciness and nicely-balanced acidity, this is a worthy everyday drinker with a keen price tag and genuine style.

The Tupinier family have been making wine in the appellation since 1770. The domaine now takes its name from them and the late Jacques Tupinier’s son-in-law, Manu Bautista. Manu’s presence fills a room, he has a passion for the domaine and family. With no children of his own, he has employed his sister’s two children who will in turn succeed him. He likes to destalk all the fruit and, following a long cold maceration for the colour and flavour, will do a gentle fermentation over a period of two to three weeks. The estate’s style shows off a harmonious richness and confidence.Read less

Region

Mercurey

Located in the heart of the Cote Chalonnaise, Mercurey has the largest area under vine and produces the most structured wines in the district. A little white is produced, but it is robust earthy reds from Pinot Noir grown on limestone and marl soil that are most interesting. In the 16th Century Henri IV's lover Gabrielle d'Estrees was a fan, although the King himself preferred neighbouring Givry.
