The impact of the seasons means they have made just 280 bottles of this glorious Grand Cru and I was quite surprised we were even allowed to taste it. I fear it might be my only time! So typically Musigny, with sweet dark Morello cherry. Ample in its fruit texture, whilst flamboyant it is no way excessive, with velvet like tannins. Subtle in its fullness and so long. An absolute joy and a lasting memory of the vintage at this great estate!

  • Neal Martin, January 2023, Score: 93-95

The 2021 Musigny Grand Cru comprises one barrel, moved from a new to a used one after racking as they felt the oak influence was too strong. That was a clever decision as the oak is deftly interwoven on the nose and allowing the noble terroir to come through. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, very harmonious with touches of orange rind and cedar towards the finish. Very fine, though the Clos-de-Bèze might be the long distance runner. Drink 2025-2047.

  • Burghound, January 2023, Score: 91-94

A discreet application of wood sets off overtly spicy, elegant and cool aromas of plum, red and dark berries, exotic tea and a whiff of violet. There is excellent richness and volume to the dense and mineral-driven larger-scaled flavors that possess notably better depth along with fine length on the firmly structured finale. Drink 2033+

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2022, Score: 92-95

A fine density of crimson purple. The bouquet indicates an appropriate level of majesty. The small volume made began in new wood and was then moved to a one year old barrel at the first racking. Still very backward. Plenty of depth of fruit, a little foursquare, sound nonetheless. Good acidity, medium persistence. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: December 2022

They have an embarrassment of riches within their armoury of four 1ers Crus and six exceptional Grands Crus, culminating with plots of both Clos de Bèze and Le Musigny. They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.Read less

Region

Le Musigny

Le Musigny is a red Grand Cru vineyard based in Burgundy’s Chambolle Musigny village in the Côte de Nuits. Le Musigny is situated between the scrubland at the top of the slope and the upper section of Clos de Vougeot on well-draining limestone soil. The wines of Le Musigny are some of the best in Burgundy on a par with those of Romanée Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze.
