  • Goedhuis, February 2024

A rare gem, Ornellaia Bianco is produced in tiny quantities. The 2021 is 100% Sauvignon Blanc and thanks to a change in regulations, it can now be classified as a DOC rather than IGT. Broad in complexity, lemon balm, mango, chamomile, hay, fresh almonds and hazelnuts are just some of the flavours that we find in this exquisite 2021. A beautiful balancing act, a bright, cleansing acidity on the palate cuts through the rich creamy fruit with perfect tension. The careful use of oak (25% new) gives a soft, vivid texture and it salty, mineral finish is long, aromatically intense and profoundly fresh. It will age for a good ten years.

The 2021 Ornellaia Bianco is alluring. I sense a bit more textural richness vis-à-vis prior editions, a positive in my book. White pear, jasmine, sage, mint, white pepper, peach and apricot fill out the layers. Light tropical accents appear with some aeration, adding a tropical flair that is quite attractive. This is impeccably done. Drink 2024-2029.

  • James Suckling, July 2023, Score: 99

This is a dense and focused white but agile and lightly chewy. Very pretty aromas. Full-bodied with tension and framing that gives this wine real precision and intensity. Tight at the end. April 2024 release. Already beautiful but will age wonderfully. Best white ever from here?

  • Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, July 2022, Score: 95

Previously a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier, the Ornellaia 2021 Ornellaia Bianco is now all Sauvignon Blanc. The estate recently planted Semillon, so it is possible that we will one day see that grape in the blend (especially because it is known to thrive in hot vintages). This wine plays its best cards in terms of texture. It sports broad shoulders and enough texture to support those many creamy citrus and delicately tropical flavors. A dusting of crushed stone adds elegance. The wine should show its best results in five to 10 years from now. Drink 2024-2038.

Producer

Ornellaia

Since being founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori, Ornellaia has firmly established itself as one of the most revered wine estates in the world. Situated on the Tuscan coast, within the iconic Bolgheri appellation, the estate has long been dedicated to producing wines of unrivalled beauty and elegance. Thanks to the combination of Bolgheri’s unique terroir and growing conditions, Ornellaia consistently produces world-class wines from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc grapes, all of which are full of Mediterranean charisma. With an eighty-person strong team working full-time, Ornellaia’s passion and attention to detail is essential to its legacy; complacency is forbidden, and such is their meticulous approach, that everything is done on a grape-by-grape basis. Since 2006, Winemaker and Estate Director Axel Heinz has attributed a single word to each year, with the intricacies of individual vintages being wonderfully captured by a chosen contemporary artist and reproduced as an exclusive label, as well as a site-specific work of art that remains part of the estate’s permanent collection. Not only is Ornellaia an ambassador for the region, but the estate also reaffirms the belief that Bolgheri’s distinctive climate and diversity of soils creates wines as complex and delightful as any in the world.

Region

Bolgheri

The medieval town of Bolgheri was originally made famous by the poet Giosuè Carducci who wrote about the stunning Cypress Avenue, a breathtaking and magical three mile long corridor of trees leading up to the entrance to the village. Swept away to the coastal and most westerly area of Tuscany, Bolgheri has become synonymous with wines known as ‘Super Tuscans'. Composed of classic Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc (intermixed with the occasional Sangiovese), the Super Tuscans began as mere experimentation in the 1960s and 70s. These international French varieties flourished in Bolgheri's warm, yet maritime climate which resulted in unexpected success and reknown. It is here that one finds such famous names as Ornellaia, Tignanello and Sassicaia.
