  • Goedhuis, December 2022

This is as grand as they get. Floral potpourri scent, fresh red fruits, strawberry and red currants. It has the perfect composition of fruit, alcohol, a silky core of ripe tannins and energetic freshness. The flavours and ripeness of fruit just keep building as the wine rests in the mouth, so amazingly layered. This is an exceptional wine and an absolute highlight of the vintage. Glorious.

  • Neal Martin, January 2023, Score: 95-97

The 2021 Richebourg Grand Cru comprises of two barrels this year (one new, one 2-year-old). It has a beautifully-defined bouquet, very pure and intense, easily the most concentrated of all Grivot’s cuvées. Baked cherries, bergamot and a touch of bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity, focused with a pliant finish that lingers long in the mouth, leaving a saline residue that urges you to take another sip. Proper Richebourg!

  • Burghound, January 2023, Score: 93-96

This possesses the spiciest nose in the range with its array of sandalwood, anise, clove, jasmine tea and cool black cherry and hoisin scents. The succulent, round and very generously proportioned bigbodied flavors that display focused power and muscle on the mineral-driven, palate soaking and superbly long finish. This youthfully austere effort is markedly compact, and I would strongly suggest not even thinking of opening a bottle before its 10th anniversary. Terrific. Drink 2038+

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2022, Score: 94-98

A full crimson purple, a fine robe if not excessively deep. The bouquet is not yet ready to speak, brilliantly nuanced on the palate, with an appropriate density. You have to wait for each individual flavour to come out, alpine strawberry, sweet red cherry, then the finest and most distinguished of raspberries. All you could want and still really light on its feet. But just two barrels. Drink from 2030-2040+.

Producer

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.

Region

Richebourg

Richebourg is one of the six Grand Cru vineyards in Vosne Romanée consisting of 8ha which is shared between 10 producers including Domaine de la Romanée Conti, Domaine Alain Hudelot-Noellat and Domaine Meo-Camuzet. Richebourg is based mainly on limestone deposits with some clay making the wines robust and voluptuous with a long life expectancy
