  • Goedhuis, December 2023

This great Grand Cru was a favourite of the monks of Cluny in the early days of classification. The Drouhin Laroze 1.5 hectares are particularly important; planted in 1949 they are over 70 years old and produce fruit of exceptional quality and intensity. This stunning cuvée is faultless, perfectly harmonising the overall balance between aromatic scent, fruit flavour and structured depth. A perfume of ripe pinot characters, with tayberry and forest fruits. The tannins are silky, giving an impression of graceful power with a fine lift of freshness on the finish. A Grand Cru in every way.

  • Neal Martin, January 2024, Score: 94-96

Blended with 25% whole bunches, the 2022 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru takes time to unfurl on the nose. It’s quite backward but well-defined with raspberry, wild strawberry, sous-bois and crushed stone. The palate is well-balanced with fine-grain tannins, fresh and lightly spiced, gaining depth towards the finish. Good vigor and persistence - this is a classy Clos-de-Bèze. Drinking Window: 2028-2050.

  • Burghound, January 2024, Score: 92-95

This is quite firmly reduced and revealling nothing aromatically. More interesting are the beautifully textured and tension-filled bigger-bodied flavours that exhibit fine length on the dusty and balanced finale. This would benefit from having better depth but the potential to develop it appears to present. Drinking 2034+.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 93-96

25% whole bunch vinification. More of a pinky purple. Still in barrel, so the bouquet reflects this. There is a fine and concentrated mineral thread through the middle of this wine and significant class to the fruit. Does it have the silky sensual quality of the very finest? Drink from 2032-2040.

They have an embarrassment of riches within their armoury of four 1ers Crus and six exceptional Grands Crus, culminating with plots of both Clos de Bèze and Le Musigny. They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.Read less

Chambertin Clos de Bèze

Gevrey-Chambertin has more Grand Crus than any other appellation in Burgundy. Unusually wines from Clos de Beze may simply call themselves Chambertin, which is an indicator of the quality of these vineyards. One of the most complete of all the Grand Crus, rivalling the revered Romanee-Conti, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze wines are the pinnacle of Pinot Noir - fragrant, powerfully complex and intense.
