Wine Advocate, December 2023, Score: 94+
The 2022 Calvert Pinot Noir is currently closed and firm on the nose (although a point to note, the Calvert and Block 5 were bottled in September, and it is now late November. The other Pinots from this vintage went to bottle in May). In the mouth, however, this wine hits a massive stride. Forthright tannins accompany powerful fruit and fine acidity to make an impact. There’s pomegranate and cherry, violets, rosehips and capers, with green olive tapenade and even a hint of bone broth. Once again, the acidity in conjunction with the tannins combine to bring on a cool finish... lovely. I do love the strawberry through the finish. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023-2036.

Vinous, May 2024, Score: 93
The 2022 Pinot Noir Calvert is an intriguingly fragrant wine, evoking the medicinal herbs of an Italian aperitivo alongside cherries, fruit cake and festive spices, which continue on the palate. It fills the mouth but does so without any sense of heaviness. The 2022 is a calming, relaxed wine with a tender charm and mouthcoating tannins that provide an assured structure on the finish without being assertive. The 2022 will evolve gracefully but is already a flavorful party in your mouth. Drink 2025-2035.

Jancis Robinson, April 2024, Score: 17.5+
Medium crimson. Perfumed and black-fruited. Dried herbs, smoky, wet-stone minerality and a salty/savoury character that makes it extra appealing. The tannins are fine-grained and elegant. Drink 2023-2038.
Region
Central Otago
For many years New Zealand growers did not know which grape variety could grow in Central Otago. Situated in the very south of the South Island it was always thought that only white grape varieties could be planted. Nowadays however there is no turning back as Pinot Noir rules the roost. There are many reasons why pinot has had so much success in the region, including the dry, sunny climate and the well-draining schist soils. Pinot Noir from Central Otago is usually quite powerful with lots of vibrant fruit and relatively high alcohol.
