  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, October 2024

Aux Lavières lies on the Vosne Romanée side of Nuits St Georges, just below 1er Cru Murgers. In style it references both villages, combining Vosne charm with some Nuits muscle. Intense dark bramble fruit armoas, with a layer of spice and vanilla. The attack is succulent and juicy, prior to a tight tannic core giving firmness and direction on the finish. Broad and full.

  • Neal Martin, January 2024, Score: 88-90

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Lavières has a tightly-knit, slightly tertiary nose with tobacco-tinged red fruit. Initially, it’s a little subdued but gradually finds its voice in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. A more structured and maybe austere take on the vintage - a serious Nuits Saint-Georges that should be rounded out by the new oak once blended. Drinking Window: 2026-2036.

  • Burghound, January 2024, Score: 89-91

Once again there is enough reduction to knock down the nose at present. Reduction flattens the nose though there is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the equally mineral-suffused middleweight flavors that terminate in a compact, youthfully austere and lingering finish that displays only a trace of backend rusticity. This is also quite good. Drinking 2030+.

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2024, Score: 18+

The entire Grivot portfolio seems to have elevated itself above the hair-raising challenges and compound issues of the vintage, and the results are remarkable. Serene, refined, long and even, this is a stunning wine, and it warrants a very rare ‘+’ given that I feel it will improve over time. If you find the Vosne-Romanée (£360 per 6 bottles IB), this is another gorgeous wine.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 90-93

A little deeper in ruby colour. A pleasing mid ripeness to the fruit, this Nuits Lavières is beautifully balanced, with a fine mineral crunch following the solid and persistent raspberry fruit. Fine length. Elegant for Nuits, yet with a well-defined structure. Drink from 2028-2036.

Producer

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.

Region

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
