  • Goedhuis, December 2023

This 3-hectare plot of 50-year-old vines is the family’s pride and joy and plays an ambassadorial role for the commune of Pernand Vergelesses, much as the hill of Corton does for its namesake appellation. Dark Morello cherry colour, this is a tight and compact wine, with abundant dark berry fruits. Multilayered with a rewarding sweetness on the finish thanks to enticing flavours of mocha and spice.

The 2022 Pernand-Vergelesses Ile de Vergelesses 1er Cru came directly from a barrel that had not been racked. This explains why it is quite backward on the nose, with touches of blackberry and bilberry, quite a heightened marine influence, and hints of oyster shell coming through with time. The medium-bodied palate has impressive volume and fine tannins, a little fleshier than Chandon des Briailles' other cuvées with a bright, slightly peppery finish. This is contemporary Pernand firing on all cylinders. Drinking Window: 2026-2024.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 91-93

Still in barrel, unracked. The holding, three hectares planted to pinot, consists of one hectare of old vines from 1961, the rest mostly 30 to 40 years old. There is a little more density to the colour, and certainly a most profound bouquet which shows more classical fruit and less the effects of vinifying with whole bunches. 15% new wood shows a little in its extreme youth. A spicy dark fruited finish. Very good. Drink from 2028-2037.

  • William Kelley, January 2024, Score: 92-94

Always the insider's choice at this address, the 2022 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile de Vergelesses unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet cherries and plums mingled with rose petals and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, ample and velvety, with a fleshy core of fruit that nicely cloaks its fine but chalky structuring tannins, it exhibits excellent potential.

Producer

Domaine Chandon de Briailles

The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.

Region

Pernand Vergelesses

With its neighbours, Ladoix Serrigny and Aloxe-Corton, Pernand Vergelesses has its own village and premier cru appellations but shares the two grand crus: Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay. The limestone marl soil is well-suited to growing Chardonnay and the resulting white wines are crisp and mineral with a good capacity for ageing. Pinot Noir is planted in areas of redder iron-rich soil and the best vineyards produce charmingly soft red wines with classic notes of raspberries and violets.
