  • Wine Advocate, May 2025, Score: 93

The 2022 Petit Caro is 62% Malbec, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc sourced from Luján de Cuyo and Paraje Altamira. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in equal parts concrete and barrique for 12 months. A deep, expressive nose of black fruits, flowers and tobacco develops around a gently toasty core, introducing a velvety, rich palate lifted by focused acidity. It concludes with a lush finish framed by polished tannins and a composed, high-toned focus that gains energy with aeration (Matthew Luczy). Drink 2025-2032.

The 2022 Petit Caro combines 62% Malbec, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc from Paraje Altamira, La Consulta and Agrelo. Half of the wine spent 12 months in oak barrels. Deep purple in hue, it reveals fine oak and cedar notes with a balsamic hint alongside a cherry core. The juicy palate also offers lightly chalky tannins and a subtle saline touch. A savory red with a moderately concentrated mouthfeel (Joaquín Hidalgo). Drink 2025-2040.

The idea of forming a partnership between Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite and the prestigious Argentinian wine family, Catena, was born in 1999. Initial enthusiasm quickly became a concrete plan to produce a single wine that would combine French and Argentine cultures and enhance the alliance between the signature grape of each producer, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Work began in 1999 to produce Bodegas CARO’s first vintage in 2000. The success of the early vintages resulted in the creation of another wine in 2003, Amancaya, which similarly to its older brother is based on a harmonious balance of Argentinian identity and Bordeaux style. Bodegas CARO later decided to celebrate the grape variety for which Argentina’s vineyards are famous by launching a pure Malbec, Aruma, in 2010. The most recent addition to the esteemed portfolio has been Petit Caro. Working with a similar blend to Amancaya, sourced from only the best plots and given extra time in oak for a beautiful smoky depth of flavour. The Bodegas CARO winery, set in the heart of Mendoza, serves as the anchor of the CARO project. The renovation of the historic building and gardens in order to expand the winery and open the Bodega to the outside has brought the final touch to the original project.Read less

Region

Mendoza

Mendoza is the largest viticultural region in Argentina, located in the west of Argentina around the city of the same name. The region accounts for more than two-thirds of the country's total wineproduction, which focuses on red wine production. Malbec is the most important grape variety but Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc, among many others, are also grown. Central Mendoza has the longest tradition for fine wine production as the climate is temperate and the soils are unusually gravelly for Argentina as elsewhere in Mendoza soils are typically alluvial and sandy.
