  • Goedhuis, December 2023

This fine vineyard was planted in 1956 and the domaine has a peach of a location mid-slope, facing south and southeast. This was one of the earlier bottlings at the domaine immediately after the 2023 harvest, as Claude was keen to capture the brilliant, youthful fruit. Red cherry and a touch of bitter chocolate, combining sweetness and fresh fruit tension. This is a delicious cuvée from one of Savigny’s finest Premiers Crus.

The 2022 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru was bottled the week prior to my visit. This comes from more limestone soils with a light clay topsoil. The lively bouquet has plenty of energy, with crushed stone infusing the red berry fruit, touches of briar and pottery wheel. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip. Crunchy black fruit laced with graphite leads to quite a precise, persistent, classically-styled Savigny finish. Not suave or sophisticated, yet surfeit with character. Drinking Window: 2026-2040.

  • Wine Advocate, January 2024, Score: 90-92

This south-facing, early ripening site has delivered a rather rich 2022 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières. It offers up aromas of cherries, raspberries, violets and licorice followed by a broad, fleshy, medium to full-bodied palate.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 89

In bottle. A fine bright mid purple. The nose is exquisitely floral, and seems much more refreshing than the Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Fourneaux. There is a lot of wine here, some slightly astringent tannins which will assist the wine in its ageing. A fine stylish finish. Drink from 2027-2033.

Producer

Domaine Chandon de Briailles

The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.

Region

Savigny-lès-Beaune

The picturesque village of Savigny-lès-Beaune, just to the north of Beaune, is a relatively prolific producer in Burgundian terms. Less serious than its neighbours, Pommard and Volnay, these are nonethless delicious wines - perfumed, delicate and elegant. A tiny amount of white is produced.
