The 2022 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Frionnes is saline and mineral, unfurling in the glass with notes of white flowers, oyster shells and citrus oil. Medium-bodied, satiny and racy, with a pure core of fruit and a penetrating, mineral finish. It's derived from plantings at between 11,000-14,000 vines per hectare in Kimmeridgian limestone. Drink 2027 - 2045

Frionnes covers several sub lieux-dits, though Olivier declassifies the part in Es Champs. He notes that there is Kimmeridgian clay-limestone here, more similar to Sancerre than Chablis soil in the detail. The vines were planted in 1935, 1960, 1985 and 2011. Very pale in colour, with some almond paste on the nose. A fresh orchard fruit otherwise on the nose, the volume expanding significantly on the palate. Very fine. Drink from 2027-2035.

Region

Saint Aubin

Due west of Puligny and Chassagne lies the little, picturesque village of St. Aubin. With the neighbouring village of Gamay, it produces 2/3 white wine and 1/3 red wine over 230 hectares of vines of which over 3/4 are premier cru. It was one of the last appellations created in only 1970 but has since created an excellent reputation for good value well made Burgundy that can replicatePuligny. Some of the most expressive vineyards are En Remilly and Les Murgers des Dents de Chien.
