  • Goedhuis, April 2023, Score: 90-92

The Berrouet family is to the world of wine as the Dimbleby family is to the media world. Jean-Claude Berrouet, owner of this lovely estate in Montagne St Emilion, was wine maker at Petrus for 40 years. He has now passed on the mantle at Petrus to his son Jean-Charles, whilst his other son Jeff looks after this family property with a similar love and attention. Expressive scent of bilberry, sloes and sour cherry. On the palate, it has a bright purity of fresh red fruits, with characters of white truffle and freshly picked mint. Delicate and yet rich, with a lovely sweet fruit compote finish.

  • Wine Advocate, April 2023, Score: 90-92

Revealing aromas of graphite, licorice, ripe dark berries (not to excess) and nicely integrated hints of smoke, the 2022 Vieux Château Saint André is a powerful, rather elegant wine, with velvety tannins and a supple and fleshy palate with racy acids. Jeff Berrouet is doing a stunning job at his own family estate.

  • Decanter, April 2023, Score: 93

Gorgeous scents, softly floral, slightly spiced and lots of bright red and black bramble fruit. Juicy, alive, energetic and so clean. High acidity is at the fore, really quite lean and high toned, not much in the way of density of tannins, they're more fine and delicate but still delivering a concentrated, ripe and fruit-forward wine with tension and brightness. Definitely has a charm, with some spiced dark chocolate touches lingering on the finish.

  • Jeb Dunnuck, Febuary 2025, Score: 93

The 2022 Vieux Château Saint Andre is made by Jeff Berrouet from 12.5 hectares of vines in the Montagne region on the Right Bank. Mostly Merlot, yet with 10% Cabernet Franc, raised mostly in used barrels (10% new), it has a terrific nose of ripe black cherries, tobacco leaf, damp earth, and chocolate that would give a top Saint-Emilion a run for its money. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, round, supple 2022 with ripe tannins, layered mouthfeel, and outstanding length.

  • Jane Anson, April 2023, Score: 93

This is always a château to look out for in quality vintages, because you get the skill of the Berrouet family at great value. Helped by the limestone soils also, this is expectedly impressive, softly spoken damson and black cherry fruit, pulses of pomegranate and passion fruit, bitter chocolate and liqourice. A great wine, a buy.

Region

Montagne St Emilion

The satellite commune of Montagne St Emilion is the largest appellation of St Emilion in Bordeaux, strewn with limestone and clay hillside vineyards and limestone plateaus. Of all the satellite communes, Montage St Emilion produces some of the deepest and richest wines which are often great value as these wines can be as good as Grand Cru St Emilion. Predominantly Merlot based, this red-wine only AOC traditionally also uses a collection of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon but Malbec and Carmenere are allowed as well.
