Goedhuis Waddesdon, April 2025
The Gingin clone and Margaret River are a match made in heaven, and from the low yielding vineyard of Ovale Willows in 2023, this is a gem. A cooler vintage, lending a pleasing leanness and focus to the wine this year. The nose is beautifully balanced, with an inviting spiciness and blossom note, backed with a mouthwatering grapefruit pithiness. Weightier on the palate, with hints of roasted almonds, ripe peaches and pear, followed by a bracing sea spray salinity. This is absolutely delicious, and dangerously drinkable. It's hard not to draw comparisons to Burgundy—there’s an Old World soul to this wine, elegantly dressed in New World style. Tasted blind, you might mistake it for a brilliant Chassagne-Montrachet, though offered at a far more approachable price point.

Wine Advocate, July 2024, Score: 94
The 2023 Gingin Willows Vineyard Chardonnay leads with white pepper and crushed nuts, white peach and lanolin, spring florals and a hint of sandalwood. In the mouth, the wine is precise, quiet and talcy, with musk and spearmint, almond meal and roasted hazelnuts. There is a hint of buttery popcorn on the nose. Green apples and pears color the finish. This is a nice wine from a lovely, mild, season in Margaret River. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Region
Margaret River
Certainly the best wine area in Western Australia, if not the whole country. The idyllic scenery of Margaret River (surf-lapped rocky coast, towering karri forest, abundant wildlife) has only been home to wine production since the 1970s. Hard to believe given the quality of the Chardonnays and Cabernets produced by the likes of Leeuwin, Cullen, Moss Wood and Vasse Felix. Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon all also thrive here. The climate is mild, tempered by the Indian Ocean and the drying wind known as the Freemantle Doctor, and infertile red loam soils are the most sought after for viticulture.
