  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

The flagship wine of the domaine, this cuvée brings together two separate parcels; the first coming from the Monts Luisants section of this Grand Cru, and the second from the main body of the Clos. These two specific terroirs each make a clear mark on this assured and confident Pinot, with Monts Luisants contributing freshness, minerality and structured tannins and Clos de la Roche then clothing this framework in luscious, generous fruit. The 2023 is beautifully accomplished, with an open, engaging nose that sings with notes of red cherries, raspberries, white pepper and dried wild herbs. Intense and weighty, the palate has delicious fruit sweetness and silky, plush tannins that are effortlessly interwoven with a bright, blood orange acidity. Powerful, yet poised, this is a wine that will continue to unfurl further layers of complexity as it ages.

  • Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 94-96

Quite engaging and mercurial, the 2023 Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a very impressive bouquet: hints of gingerbread and fig underscore orange rind-laced dark berry fruit and crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied and quite persistent in the mouth, with insistent grip and a structured finish. This will require time in bottle but it should turn into an impressive Clos de la Roche.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2024, Score: 95-97

Imperial purple, vibrant. There is not a lot of nose to begin with as this great wine bides its time. It comes across in multiple layers, berries that taste of perfect ripeness with just one or two darker notes creeping in, though the structure has maintained considerable freshness. Raspberries predominate and they appear in multiple waves. Gloriously balanced, with the right intensity and no feeling of the sunshine nor of being picked too late. The flavours stay in the mouth. Drink from 2035-2045.

Their combination of late picking, destemming, and ageing in old oak barrels achieve the domaine’s distinctive style of long-lived wines. Laurent Ponsot left the domaine in 2017, and the estate is now run by his sister, Rose Marie Ponsot. Alexandre Abel has joined the team as régisseur, and together they continue to uphold these three principles of the estate. Furthermore, they are not afraid to experiment, and are always evolving the viticulture and winemaking style with small innovations. The estate has eschewed the fashion of using new oak barrels to age the wines, preferring seasoned casks which act as an “elevage” vessel rather than imparting barrel flavours. As Alexandre says “we want our wines to taste the maximum of the true fruit and terroir flavours that nature provides us with".Read less

Region

Clos de la Roche

The finest and biggest Grand Cru red wine appellation in Burgundy's Morey-St-Denis, on the Côte deNuits, covering 16.9ha. Clos de la Roche's soils are rich in marl which gives more body, depth and ageing potential to its wines than most other vineyards. Wines from Clos de la Roche tend to be powerful and full bodied with black fruit aromas and flavours, developing rich, gamey characters with age.
