  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

As a single, 50-hectare vineyard, Clos de Vougeot accounts for just over three quarters of the total vineyard area within the village of Vougeot and commands a dominant position along the Route des Grands Crus. Grivot own almost 1.9 hectares of this Grand Cru, with their vines all located in one block to the eastern edge of the clos. Followers of this wine should note that, whilst 36 barrels were made in 2023, there are only 7 barrels of the 2024 in Grivot’s cellars. The 2023 is a highly expressive wine, with beguiling notes of white pepper, dried wild herbs, freshly grated nutmeg and confit cherries. Concentrated and weighty, this is a voluptuous Pinot with delicious fruit sweetness and silky, mouth-coating tannins. Finely balanced, precise acidity ensures a long and charming finish.

  • Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 94-96

The 2023 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a very succinct bouquet. It's one of the cuvées from Grivot with what feels like darker fruit than others. This is beautifully defined, with hints of sea cave/oyster shell and a dash of black pepper that manifests with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and velvety smooth, with pliant tannins, moderate depth and orange rind, blood oranges and a hint of cardamom toward the finish. This is quite a complex Clos de Vougeot that should age with style.

  • Jancis Robinson, November 2024, Score: 17.5+

Cask sample. Mid ruby. Grand cru restraint after the panache of the Aux Reignots. But tangible class and concentration. A mix of red and black fruits, strawberry, red cherry and cassis. Balanced fruit character and expression with moderate fresh acidity and fine tannins. A very fine grand cru. (MH)

Producer

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.

Region

Clos de Vougeot

Clos de Vougeot is a Grand Cru appellation situated in the heart of the Cote de Nuits producing only red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. The vines are enclosed within a single walled vineyard built by monks in the 12th and 14th Centuries. With 47.54 hectares under vine Clos de Vougeot is the largest Grand Cru vineyard in the Cote d'Or.
