    The smallest of Gevrey’s 1er Crus at just 0.58 ha of which the domaine owns 80% sitting in an enviable place just below Grand Cru Mazis-Chambertin. A fresh and crunchy style, pomegranate and red currants. A tightly composed glass, with a tort tannic personality sitting above the parapet in the mid palate, however everything integrates perfectly at the end, with intensity and longevity.

    The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Au Closeau 1er Cru (named after the famous inspector, according to my learned friend from The Wine Society) has a perfumed, licorice-tinged bouquet with gorgeous pure red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, beautifully balanced with a slight creaminess toward the finish. This is another 2023 from Drouhin-Laroze that is in a different league from the 2022.

    A ripe mix of red and dark cherry reveals wisps of both earth and the sauvage. There is good vibrancy to the seductively textured medium weight flavors that conclude in a dusty and youthfully austere finale. This should drink well on the younger side but reward up to a decade of keeping.

    Full but fresh ruby purple. There is a little more immediate fruit concentration here, a fresh raspberry. Caroline notes that they had to be very careful here on the deeper soil, but they managed the yield and this shows in the result here which is nicely disciplined, all in red fruit. Drink from 2029-2035.

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
