Wine Advocate, June 2024, Score: 93-95
The 2023 Gratallops is from an incredibly dry year in Priorat, when they had to really think about how to make the vines survive (irrigation!) with only 43 liters in the first four months of the cycle. It's lively and fruit-driven, and Álvaro Palacios says, "[It's] a miracle for the year we had." 2023 was juicy and soft, mellow and clean, Mediterranean with notes of aromatic herbs. They had to irrigate some of the vineyards to keep the yields. It has 20% Cariñena, and they produced wine with seven vineyards instead of the usual 13. It is a fine and elegant vintage. Drink 2026-2034. Luis Gutiérrez.

This is one of Spain’s most exciting DO zones, which underwent a winemaking revolution in the 1990s, when it began producing the world’s greatest Garnachas (aka Grenache). The DO is covered with extremely low-yielding old vines, with an average production of just 5 or 6 hl/ha. Poor stone soils make up the terraced vineyards, and the Garnachas they bear are hugely concentrated, with fulsome alcohol and fruit richness, tempered with tingling minerality.
