  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

With nine-hundred vines of 70-years-old, Les Naugues is one of Charton’s most prized vineyards and takes pride of place at the front of the winery. Here the deep clay soils help create a gloriously full and rich Mercurey, displaying aromas of black cherry, crushed black pepper, and liquorice. The palate possesses power with structured tannins, yet there is lovely bright berry fruit and freshness on the finish.

  • Burghound, October 2024, Score: 91-93

A very pretty, indeed almost perfumed, nose freely speaks of cool, pure and elegant aromas of red cherry, currant, crushed anise and a violet top note. The heightened sense of refinement continues onto the nicely detailed and overtly mineral-driven middle weight flavors that possess a lovely texture that carries over to the youthfully austere, firm and balanced finale. This is excellent and while it's constructed to repay at least a decade of keeping, I suspect that it will be approachable after only 4 to 5 years if you don't have the patience to wait until full maturity.

Region

Mercurey

Located in the heart of the Cote Chalonnaise, Mercurey has the largest area under vine and produces the most structured wines in the district. A little white is produced, but it is robust earthy reds from Pinot Noir grown on limestone and marl soil that are most interesting. In the 16th Century Henri IV's lover Gabrielle d'Estrees was a fan, although the King himself preferred neighbouring Givry.
