    As the only Premier Cru Aligoté in Burgundy, this cuvée has garnered a considerable following and not without cause; this is a superb, beguiling wine with the depth and complexity that can only come from very old vine fruit (70% of the blend comes from vines planted in 1911). The 2023 has an enticing, perfumed nose with notes of white blossom, freshly dried hay, confit lemons and greengages. Full of ripe, yellow-toned fruit, this deliciously succulent white shimmers with crystalline acidity and a stony minerality. An energetic, yet elegant wine, this is surely the pinnacle of the Aligoté grape.

    The 2023 Morey-Saint-Denis Mont Luisants Blanc 1er Cru has quite a neutral nose at first, unfurling with dewy apple, freshly sliced pear and grass clipping scents. Perhaps more a textural Mont Luisants, the palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, though it doesn't quite possess the complexity of the previous vintage at the moment. It will be intriguing to revisit in bottle.

    This year the malolactic has taken place, unlike in 2022. Mid lemon yellow. A refined bouquet which is really very pretty, graceful waves of fruit, a little lime blossom, nothing angular. An exceptionally stylish wine on the palate, while the finish brings the Aligoté tension and vivacity after the relatively fleshy mid palate. A fine long aftertaste. Drink from 2028-2038.

Their combination of late picking, destemming, and ageing in old oak barrels achieve the domaine’s distinctive style of long-lived wines. Domaine Ponsot is an atypical but outstanding domaine in Morey St Denis. Their combination of late picking, destemming, and ageing in old oak barrels achieve the domaine’s distinctive style of long-lived wines. Laurent Ponsot left the domaine in 2017, and the estate is now run by his sister, Rose Marie Ponsot. Alexandre Abel has joined the team as régisseur, and together they continue to uphold these three principles of the estate. Furthermore, they are not afraid to experiment, and are always evolving the viticulture and winemaking style with small innovations. The estate has eschewed the fashion of using new oak barrels to age the wines, preferring seasoned casks which act as an “elevage” vessel rather than imparting barrel flavours. As Alexandre says “we want our wines to taste the maximum of the true fruit and terroir flavours that nature provides us with".Read less

Morey Saint Denis

Morey St. Dénis often suffers from an identity crisis. They are more fruit forward than the wines of Gevrey Chambertin, yet more structured than those of Chambolle Musigny. It seems in this sensethat they are like middle children, always wanting to please yet not standing out as the noisy one or the notably quiet one. They are however crowd pleasers and for those who feel that Gevreys are too muscular and Chambolles too feminine; Moreys seem just right, offering velvety tannins and tangible fruit. The village offers five grand cru vineyards including Clos de la Roche, Clos St. Dénis and Clos des Lambrays which nonetheless can rival those of neighbouring villages in terms of quality (some even view them as the best in the Côte de Nuits) and various premier cru vineyards.
