Located on the very northern edge of Nuits St Georges, and neighbouring Vosne Romanée’s Malconsorts, Aux Boudots enjoys well-drained soils with plenty of stones. A strip of rock running through the middle of the vineyard has caused problems for the Grivots in the past; breaking their horse-drawn plough on two separate occasions. With fragrant notes of violets, wild heather and ripe red cherries, this is an attractive cuvée already revealing layers of depth and interest. A core of plush fruit sweetness is corralled by a bright, mineral acidity that brings a vibrant energy and is the calling card of the vineyard’s limestone bedrock. Suave, fine-grained tannins and a lift of white pepper spice bring the wine to a satisfying close.

  • Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 93-95

The 2023 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Boudots 1er Cru is a blend of young vines planted in 2018 and old vines that Mathilde Grivot speculated could be up to a century old. The last vintage exclusively from the old vines was 2015). It has a complex bouquet, with a mixture of red and black fruit, potpourri, crushed minerals and light sea spray scents that evoke images of the sea. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red berry fruit. It's the spiciest of Grivot's NSGs, with commendable weight and impressive mineralité toward the focused, intense finish. This has a bright future ahead. Drink 2027-2048.

  • Jancis Robinson, November 2024, Score: 17+

Cask sample. Mid-pale ruby. Extra ripeness and expression in the cherry and strawberry fruit. Moderate, fresh acidity and a backbone of well-knit, soft tannins. Very good and worthwhile. (MH) Drink 2028-2038.

Producer

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.

Region

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
