  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

This 4-hectare plot of 50-year-old vines is the family’s pride and joy, and plays an ambassadorial role for the commune of Pernand Vergelesses, much as the hill of Corton does for its namesake appellation. Pretty and engaging notes of red cherry and raspberry are in evidence here, alongside a perfumed hint of violets and a spicy touch of white pepper. Rounded, compact fruit sweetness is held aloft by energetic mineral tension and fine-boned, supple tannin. Although this wine has power and presence, it remains subtle and leaves a lasting impression of elegance and poise.

  • Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 90-92

The 2023 Pernand-Vergelesses Île de Vergelesses 1er Cru comes from a parcel purchased by the family's great-grandmother, located on more limestone-heavy soils than the Les Vergelesses. It has a much more minerally bouquet with vivacious red cherry and raspberry fruit. The palate is ripe and generous with kirsch, Morello cherries and very light fig notes toward the finish.

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2024, Score: 90-93

In barrel, blended. A rich purple colour, the nose shows a slightly higher volatile which adds a nutty element to the fruit on the nose, but this has not yet been cleaned up for bottling either. The fruit profile is just on the blacker side of the cusp with red berries. Leaves a lingering fine rich red and black cherry aftertaste.

Producer

Domaine Chandon de Briailles

The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.

Region

Pernand Vergelesses

With its neighbours, Ladoix Serrigny and Aloxe-Corton, Pernand Vergelesses has its own village and premier cru appellations but shares the two grand crus: Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay. The limestone marl soil is well-suited to growing Chardonnay and the resulting white wines are crisp and mineral with a good capacity for ageing. Pinot Noir is planted in areas of redder iron-rich soil and the best vineyards produce charmingly soft red wines with classic notes of raspberries and violets.
