  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

Often described as the grandest of the Grands Crus in Vosne Romanée, with the notable exception of the three monopoles owned by Romanée Conti, Richebourg needs no introduction. Grivot own a third of a hectare here, with their vines sited on the higher end of the slope. The 2023 is a voluptuous, bewitching wine that envelops the senses in velvety, hedonistic delight. Luscious notes of ripe black cherries, violets, just-picked mint and freshly cracked black pepper can all be found on the nose of this forward and self-assured wine. Richly concentrated and with great depth, a wealth of fruit sweetness is held gently aloft by an almost iridescent line of redcurrant acidity. Silky, finely spun tannins enhance the already plush texture and carry the fruit through to a long and graceful finish. This is a Pinot that merits undivided attention.

  • Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 96-98

The 2023 Richebourg Grand Cru has a typical nose for this vineyard, backward and a little stern at first. Its tightly wound redcurrant, cranberry and black plum fruit notes become more open with acquaintance. Apparently, it was very open the previous day, but this is in a mood! The palate is medium-bodied with fine structure and a beguiling sense of symmetry from start to finish. This might be the most elegant Richebourg that I have encountered from Grivot at this stage. It's very poised with an extremely long aftertaste. This will require serious cellaring. Drink 2030-2065

  • Jancis Robinson, November 2024, Score: 19

Cask sample. Mid ruby. Attention, humdinger country! Buckets of ripe red and black fruits on the nose and palate. But this runs away with its deeply luxurious velvet texture and multiple layers of intensely spiced fruit. Growing and growing in volume. Voluptuous, intense, concentrated and balanced – and deceptively approachable. The sensible will wait and wait. (MH)

Producer

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.

Region

Richebourg

Richebourg is one of the six Grand Cru vineyards in Vosne Romanée consisting of 8ha which is shared between 10 producers including Domaine de la Romanée Conti, Domaine Alain Hudelot-Noellat and Domaine Meo-Camuzet. Richebourg is based mainly on limestone deposits with some clay making the wines robust and voluptuous with a long life expectancy
