The 2023 is the epitome of purity and elegance displaying the extraordinary intensity that we have come to expect from Sassicaia. Whilst not a powerhouse like the 2016 and 2021 this year's rendition is built on classicism and refinement with an intense core of citrus, blood orange, dark cherry and dark currant flavours entwined with subtle Mediterranean herbs coming to the fore. Racy, mineral and sensual with a super fine backbone, the 2023 will thrill Sassicaia's army of followers for many decades to come. It is simply a classic from start to finish that will tempt in youth but reward with age. Congratulations Carlo and the team!

By all accounts, this was a classic vintage, and while there was a challenge with humidity and rain early in the season, the summer was sunny and perfect, and given the water reserves in the soils, harvest was relaxed and performed in an unhurried and forensic manner, picking each parcel in optimum condition. It spent 24 months in new French oak, and 40% of the barrels were new. I have been waiting for this wine’s launch all year, following my effusive note on 2023 Le Difese and the clear, obvious attributes of the 2023 vintage as a whole. The biggest question for this historic estate this year is whether this wine lives up to its potential and, if possible, my personal hopes for its ultimate potential. There is no doubt that the perfume is epic, with the oak notes sitting back respectfully, allowing the nose to unfurl and reveal a perfect tapestry of fine-woven red and black fruits and florals. Given time in the glass, the aromatics race forward, but the flavours do not expand laterally; instead, they become more detailed and intricate. I half-expected this olfactory performance to be the focus of this wine’s skills, but, inexplicably, the palate follows suit and builds on this theme. This is not a big wine, nor is it muscular. The extraordinary pedigree of the fruit ensures the flavours are impeccably marshalled, refreshingly linear and extremely formal. This is a sleek, honed, massively complex wine which finishes fresh, clean and uplifting. The tannins are far more toned and expressive than the sourness I found on the tail end of 2024 Guidalberto. There is confidence here, born of decades of experience, and it appears, at least on the surface, to mirror the great 1985, which, coincidentally, had almost identical climatic conditions. In all honesty, I venture even the 1985, if it were being brutally honest, would love to be considered alongside this stellar 2023. I went back to my glass many times, and the overarching theme is that this wine is refined, medium-bodied, truly elegant, and super-long and super-complex. It is a cosmic creation, and I am thrilled it lives up to its promise. After an hour, the energy in the glass was still sensational, and it had not dropped any of its precision, nor had it slumped or careened off in any one direction. This is a phenomenal Sassicaia, and I am eternally grateful that, instead of loading the front of the palate with all the fireworks, it cleverly releases its powers evenly throughout the entire tasting experience, allowing it to seep rhythmically into your senses, filling your taste buds with glorious, unique and memorable flavours.

Very few vintages of this legendary Tuscan wine deliver the immediate joy, richness and complexity found in the Tenuta San Guido 2023 Bolgheri Sassicaia. Tasted both before and after its January 2026 bottling, this is a wine that feels uncannily open and generous in its youth, a rare trait for Sassicaia, which is famously inscrutable at this stage. The 2023 vintage was marked by a cold winter and above-average rainfall followed by a severe outbreak of downy mildew that damaged leaves, forcing brutal fruit selection and resulting in a 20% reduction in yields. Only the estates willing to make these sacrifices succeeded, and the best wines rank among the most compelling and elusive of recent years.

The Original Super Tuscan, Sassicaia was created in the mid-1940s by the Marquis Mario Incisadella Rochetta, an aristocrat looking to reproduce his favourite wines of Bordeaux - a first in Italian viticulture. Noticeably distinct from the lighter styled wines of the region, the bold expression of Cabernet was not initially well received by the Italian drinking public. As a result, from 1948 to 1960, the wines were consumed only at the estate. The 1968 vintage marked its first commercial release. As Bordeaux blends grew in popularity over the years, Sassicaia was able to create a reputation unparalleled amongst its Super Tuscan peers. Recognising their unique terroir and exceptionalquality, they were even granted their own DOC in 1994 named accordingly, Bolgheri Sassicaia. Keeping these distinctions in mind, a winery of movie set proportions had been expected. Yet in fact, it is superbly discrete and modest - reminiscent of a domaine in Burgundy or the Rhône.Read less

Region

Bolgheri

The medieval town of Bolgheri was originally made famous by the poet Giosuè Carducci who wrote about the stunning Cypress Avenue, a breathtaking and magical three mile long corridor of trees leading up to the entrance to the village. Swept away to the coastal and most westerly area of Tuscany, Bolgheri has become synonymous with wines known as ‘Super Tuscans'. Composed of classic Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc (intermixed with the occasional Sangiovese), the Super Tuscans began as mere experimentation in the 1960s and 70s. These international French varieties flourished in Bolgheri's warm, yet maritime climate which resulted in unexpected success and reknown. It is here that one finds such famous names as Ornellaia, Tignanello and Sassicaia.
