The village-level Fournaux in this cuvée is given extra oomph by the inclusion of a proportion of old vine fruit from the Premier Cru section of this same vineyard. As Claude herself states, this is a “super village”, overdelivering against its humble appellation. The 2023 shows an aromatic and beguiling nose with notes of black cherry and sun-warmed raspberries that are underpinned by a smoky minerality almost reminiscent of graphite. There is a lovely volume of fruit sweetness here, which nonetheless allows a stony freshness to shine through. A gentle framework of ripe tannins leaves a pleasing, chalky grip on the finish.

Producer

Domaine Chandon de Briailles

The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.

Region

Savigny-lès-Beaune

The picturesque village of Savigny-lès-Beaune, just to the north of Beaune, is a relatively prolific producer in Burgundian terms. Less serious than its neighbours, Pommard and Volnay, these are nonethless delicious wines - perfumed, delicate and elegant. A tiny amount of white is produced.
