  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

Traditionally a blend across three different parcels that were planted by successive generations of the family in 1939, 1950 and 1979, this cuvée now also includes fruit from a new parcel of vines planted in 2019. The wine opens with a bright, aromatic nose of fresh cranberries and redcurrant, with a whisp of white pepper spice. This is a muscular style of Pinot, with robust, ripe tannins, a mineral-edged core and a vibrant line of red-toned acidity. A wine that will undoubtedly unfurl with time in bottle.

  • Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 89-91

The 2023 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Grands Liards is quite understated on the nose as dark berry fruit meets forest floor and pressed flower scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. The acidity is well-judged and harmonious, perhaps needing just a little more complexity to develop on the finish. Drink over the next decade.

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2025, Score: 16.5

Oh, this is lovely. Red silk ribbons of fruit, glowing, jewelled. Orange zest, pink peppercorns, a thrilling sweetness inset into thrilling tangerine-zested fragrance. Soft shadow of minerality. Long. This is a such a pleasure – ironically, the cheapest of the Simon Bize 2023s tasted at Goedhuis is by far my favourite. Clean as a whistle. (TC)

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2024, Score: 89-92

Mid crimson purple. Quite reductive, which makes the fruit firmer at the finish. Clearly greater density than the regular village wine, and proper persistence, but less joyous at the moment while reductive. Just a question of time.

Producer

Domaine Simon Bize et Fils

Domaine Simon Bize is a substantial estate by Burgundy standards, with 22 hectares mainly in the appellation of Savigny Lès Beaune and two fine grand cru parcels in Corton Charlemagne and Latricières Chambertin. It is now under the careful management of Chisa, the late Patrick Bize’s wife, and Marielle Grivot, Patrick’s sister. They like to continue his practice of whole bunch fermentation and gentle handling of the fruit during the vinification process. The result is always very stylish wines, which possess the sweetness of fruit and subtle core of tannins, which are such a character of the wines of Savigny.

Region

Savigny-lès-Beaune

The picturesque village of Savigny-lès-Beaune, just to the north of Beaune, is a relatively prolific producer in Burgundian terms. Less serious than its neighbours, Pommard and Volnay, these are nonethless delicious wines - perfumed, delicate and elegant. A tiny amount of white is produced.
