  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

Nestled between the Grands Crus of Romanée St Vivant, Echézeaux and Richebourg, it is no surprise that Les Suchots is highly acclaimed. An aromatic and perfumed wine, the 2023 is redolent with scents of Morello cherry, blood orange, pomegranate and just a hint of mineral-laden smoke. With a plush, satisfying core of ripe berry fruit, the tannins here are broad and overt, yet do not overwhelm. A line of fresh acidity brings a vibrancy to the finish, which sings with fruit sweetness. More approachable in youth than the 2022, this is nonetheless a wine with great capacity to age.

  • Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 92-94

The 2023 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a floral bouquet, with wilted rose petals infusing the vivacious red cherry/crushed strawberry fruit and just a touch of incense. Very poised, the palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannins. It is slightly ferrous toward the finish that lingers nicely. This is not a powerful Vosne-Romanée, but it will drink well for 12 to 15 years. Very fine.

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2025, Score: 17.5

Magnificent intensity of fruit – as if the essence of Alpine strawberries at their very, very sweetest. Sweet mint-and-tarragon fragrant herbs. Thrilling and mouth-watering. Clementines and blood orange and then a little swirl of smokiness. Stunning. Hard to spit. (TC)

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2024, Score: 92-94

A light garnet crimson. A little oak on the nose. Do I get enough extra in the bouquet, given the fame of the vineyard? Raspberry and alpine strawberry on the palate, this is a fine-boned, unobtrusive Suchots with considerable persistence. Understated but fine.

Producer

Domaine de l'Arlot

Domaine de l'Arlot was created in 1987 when AXA Millésimes purchased the property in Prémeaux, just south of Nuits St Georges. Its history as a domaine, however, stretches back far into the Burgundian annals passing through the Vienot and Belin dynasties before AXA’s acquisition. The domaine’s recent history has been shaped by the influence of Jean-Pierre de Smet who ran the domaine for almost two decades before Christian Seely took over direction. In 2014 Christian installed Géraldine Godot as technical manager and winemaker. A native Burgundian, she is a qualified microbiologist and oenologist, and looks set for a bright future at this Côte de Nuits estate. The domaine favours whole bunch fermentation, seeking to produce wines with refinement and finesse. (Not to be confused with Domaine Arlaud in Morey St Denis.)

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
