Vinous, January 2026, Score: 95
The 2024 Chardonnay Willows Vineyard opens with an intense core of ripe tropical fruit aromas, offering rich layers of melon and peach alongside a touch of flowers wrapped in creamy oak. The palate is full-bodied and flavored in a decadent style, with layers of sweet fruit backed by subtle acidity that build to a strong finish. More California than Margaret River, but super impressive. Drink: 2025-2035.

EL, January 2026, Score: 95
The 2024 Gingin Willows Vineyard Chardonnay is from Wilyabrup in Margaret River and made using the clone of Gingin. This is important to its flavor and structure profile, as the clone has very small, tightly packed bunches that are significantly affected by millerandage (or hen and chicken), with big and little berries. This increases the ratio of skin to juice, yielding wines of great phenolic tension, high acidity and powerful fruit. It's exactly thus in this glass. This is a magnificent wine that screams the coastal power of Margaret River. It is superb. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink: 2025-2035.
Region
Margaret River
Certainly the best wine area in Western Australia, if not the whole country. The idyllic scenery of Margaret River (surf-lapped rocky coast, towering karri forest, abundant wildlife) has only been home to wine production since the 1970s. Hard to believe given the quality of the Chardonnays and Cabernets produced by the likes of Leeuwin, Cullen, Moss Wood and Vasse Felix. Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon all also thrive here. The climate is mild, tempered by the Indian Ocean and the drying wind known as the Freemantle Doctor, and infertile red loam soils are the most sought after for viticulture.
