    (from a .3 ha parcel of vines planted in 1943). A much earthier and more deeply pitched nose reflects notes of plum, dark currant and a whiff of red pinot fruit, all of which is trimmed in all but imperceptible wood influence. There is better volume and richness if not the same refinement to the nicely textured, muscular, stony, powerful and persistent finale that gradually reveals a touch of austerity. As are virtually all competent examples of Lavaut St. Jacques, this is clearly built-to-age and wine that’s going to need at least moderate aging. Drink 2034+.

They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask.The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
