    The 2024 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos Baulets 1er Cru comes from clayey soils that meant it suffered more mildew pressure. It has a very appealing floral bouquet with wilted rose petals in an antique vase and light strawberry scents that have impressive transparency. The palate is very harmonious and poised with a keen line of acidity and hints of brown spices with just the right amount of bitterness on the finish. This has plenty of character and overcame the challenges of the growing season. Drink 2027-2038

    (from Les Larrets and En la Rue de Vergy, both of which sit high on the slope above Clos des Lambrays and Clos de Tart). A very pinot nose of the essence of red berries, spice and discreet floral wisps serves as an elegant introduction to the racy and delicious flavors that possess fine delineation and a subtle minerality on the clean, balanced and lightly austere finale. This could use better depth so at least a few years of keeping should help. Drink 2029+

    Les Larreys and En la Rue de Vergy, up-slope vineyards, picked last. There was still some mildew. The pinker side of ruby. Fresh raspberry, very clean, a pure direct fruit, some austerity at the back consistent with the hillside, with a fine and persistent finish. Drink from 2028-2033

Domaine des Lambrays

This Morey Saint Denis domaine may have passed through various owners over the recent decades, but one noticeably steadfast mark on Burgundy’s landscape has been Thierry Brouin, making the wines at this iconic estate since 1979 until his retirement in 2017. His signature style of whole bunch vinification for the grand cru has carved an esteemed place for Thierry in Burgundy’s story. The domaine was recently purchase by Bernard Arnault of LVMH, and a new régisseur has been installed. Boris Champy has nearly 10 years’ experience in the Côte d’Or working at Louis Latour, and before that in California and Bordeaux. He and Thierry worked closely alongside each other in 2017, ensuring a smooth handover. Tantalisingly short of a monopole, the domaine owns 8.66 hectares of the 8.8 ha Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru in the heart of Morey Saint Denis. As well as the substantial Clos, the domaine also has vines in premier cru and village sites within Morey, and added two small premier cru plots in Puligny Montrachet in the 1990s.

Morey Saint Denis

Morey St. Dénis often suffers from an identity crisis. They are more fruit forward than the wines of Gevrey Chambertin, yet more structured than those of Chambolle Musigny. It seems in this sensethat they are like middle children, always wanting to please yet not standing out as the noisy one or the notably quiet one. They are however crowd pleasers and for those who feel that Gevreys are too muscular and Chambolles too feminine; Moreys seem just right, offering velvety tannins and tangible fruit. The village offers five grand cru vineyards including Clos de la Roche, Clos St. Dénis and Clos des Lambrays which nonetheless can rival those of neighbouring villages in terms of quality (some even view them as the best in the Côte de Nuits) and various premier cru vineyards.

Other wines
