Ch Chasse-Spleen 2016 | £258 per 12 IB | “a fabulous Chasse-Spleen” 92-94, NM

Château Chasse Spleen is one of the top wines from the commune of Moulis in the Haut Médoc. It is a Cru Bourgeois that, more often than not, outperforms many of the Médoc’s better known Cru Classés.

Chasse Spleen make full bodied, structured wines, yet they manage to retain considerable finesse. In 2016 we were blown away by the quality of this Cabernet-dominant blend. This wine has a really lovely volume of fruit, great balance, good concentration and wonderful sweetness. It was exciting to taste and certainly one of the stars in the Médoc UGC tasting room.

We concur with Neal Martin that this is unquestionably up there with the finest vintages of Chasse Spleen. As Jane Anson so rightly comment it offers “excellent quality for the mid-tier price of Médoc wines”.

Certainly one of the more successful in this category. With a nice volume of black berry flavours and powdery tannins, this flows through to a balanced finish. A very good example from this excellent, affordable estate. Drink 2020-2027. 90-92 points, Goedhuis & Co

The 2016 Chasse-Spleen has a very elegant bouquet with neatly integrated oak, the terroir really showing through here, hints of cedar and smoke emerging with time. The palate is fresh as a button on the entry. It is cut through with a superb line of acidity that engenders superb tension, the tannins firm but fine with a subtle marine influence towards the persistent finish. This is a fabulous Chasse-Spleen, the best I have ever tasted from the estate. It could end up at the top of by banded score. 92-94 points, Neal Martin

The fruit here is good, ripe and carefully extracted. There is freshness and the whole thing hangs together with well worked tannins, offering excellent quality for the mid-tier price of Médoc wines. 90 points, Jane Anson, Decanter
