Last weekend I was lucky enough to taste two vintages side by side from this prestigious 5ème Cru Classé Pauillac. Grand-Puy-Lacoste is usually considered to outperform its classification and these wines are no exception.
Grand-Puy-Lacoste 1999 was absolutely delicious and is drinking really well at the moment. Lovely dark fruit flavours and good concentration with real finesse and purity. Compared to the 1999, the 2001 was not quite at its peak but has huge potential with slightly sweeter riper fruit and velvety tannins. Both wines were of a high quality. If you have any of the 1999 in your cellar, I would crack one open immediately but would hold off on the 2001 for a year or so for it to soften a bit.
