Having recently moved into our love nest in the heart of the Cotswolds there is much to do and see; and as luck would have it a very fine customer with a particularly good cellar lives a mere hop and a skip away and kindly invited Caroline and I to an “informal supper” on Saturday night.
Four of us assembled in his magnificent manor house for a glass of perfectly poised Salon 1996, which took some opening, the cork resisting our efforts for some while ! WOW it was fine and I have only ever tasted this rare Champagne house on a handful of occasions.
We moved through to dine in splendour waited on by a very charming French lady whose husband was creating in the kitchen. Scallops washed down with Vincent Dancer’s Meursault Perrieres 2005 – impeccable – then into one of the greatest bottles I have been privileged to drink – Chambertin 1992 from the mighty Rousseau. Meaty, sweet, gamey with incredibly texture and on and on the flavour went. A treat.
With the cheese an old white from Fontaine Gagnard, Criots Batard Montrachet 1991 served just slightly cool and married well with the cheese board. Post dinner it seemed rude not to say yes to some Marc from DRC – we were aquaplaned home by a magnificent Yorkshireman – a very good discovery indeed.
