Tasting Burgundy 2020 | Bize, Chandon de Briailles, Jobard & Rossignol

Thursday’s first tasting was in Savigny les Beaune. First stop was Domaine Simon Bize. We were met by Chisa Bize who was looking very relaxed and happy about her 2020s, and rightly so. They really were showing very well indeed and expressing all the different terroirs beautifully. The Savigny les Beaune 1er Cru Vergelesses was fabulously complex. I also loved the 1er Cru Guettes, however sadly this year will be the last for some time as the vineyards will be replanted so you should buy now! It really was a terrific tasting; the wines were rich and expressive with lots of lift and freshness.

The next visit was just around the corner at Chandon de Briailles. This has to be one of the most beautiful domaines in Burgundy. It’s not big, but a very pretty property. Claude de Nicolay has again made great wines. They are very keen on biodynamism and all the work that has gone into this domaine has now started to really come to fruition. I do have a soft spot for this domaine as they were the first wines I ever bought en primeur. It was the 1993 vintage. The Savigny les Beaunes were good, 1er Cru Lavieres is my favourite, with some lovely darker fruit. Pernand Ile de Vergelesses and two terrific Cortons, the Clos du Roi was magnificent.

We had mainly been tasting reds but now into Meursault to Domaine Jobard. This estate is definitely making some of the best white wines in Burgundy. The wines were seriously good, a very grown-up Bourgogne Blanc, which is village Meursault quality. The 1ers Crus were all equally fabulous but as with all great wines, the style of the terroirs reflects different personalities. I loved the 1er Charmes, an amphitheatre of textual flavours!

The final visit of the day was to Nicolas Rossignol, this is a domaine that we hadn’t tasted at before. He very much focuses on Volnay and Pommard and has quite a collection of different vineyards. He is very charismatic and a dynamic wine maker. We were very impressed by his wines. I loved his 1er Cru Volnays, the 1er Santenots showed very well, lovely mineral texture and the 1er Cru Chevret had very crunchy red berried fruit, delicious. Pommard 1er Epenots was very classy, silky tannins and succulent fruit.
