The next day we headed up to Morey St. Denis. Our first appointment was at Domaine Ponsot. The winery is situated at the top of the village, it was beautiful sunny morning and in the distance you could see Mont Blanc. Alexandre took us into the cellars and we tasted two fabulous whites, their St. Romain which was excellent and their gorgeous Morey St. Denis 1er Mont Luisant. All the wines were showing incredibly well, hugely expressive of the vineyards and wonderful balance. The Clos Vougeot was gorgeous, lovely textured and very broad. The Clos de Roche was sublime, hugely intense with some stunning purity.

We then had a quick visit to Domaine Tortochot, these wines were very accessible and lovely to taste all the different Cuvees of Gevrey Chambertin expressing the different climats very well indeed. However, the star wine was their Mazy Chambertin, a very classy Grand Cru indeed.

After lunch we headed to Domaine Rousseau in Gevrey Chambertin. This is always very special tasting; it always puts a smile on your face. Eric showed us around the new winery which is stunning and then we went to taste in the cellars with Cyrielle, the wines speak for themselves, really beautiful they were all superb. I did like the Clos de la Roche, obviously Chambertin wasn’t too bad either.

Back into Vosne Romanee to Domaine d’Eugenie. The wines have a lovely ripeness. Michel has made some very good wines indeed, sadly there is very little of it. The Grands Echezeaux was spectacular, very composed and serious. The Clos Eugenie was lovely, very enticing with sweet ripe fruit.

Our last visit of the day was back in Morey St. Denis tasting at Domaine Hubert Lignier. Out of the office came poor old Laurent Lignier who had just been knocked his tandem bike by a car. He was in quite a bad way but was determined to soldier on and give us our tasting. He is such a lovely man. The wines are very beautiful, gentle unforced and truly impressive, we really loved them all. His range of Morey St. Denis and Gevrey Chambertin were outstanding.
