This was a busy day with lots of visits, starting at Marc Colin in Chassagne Montrachet. His wines were showing brilliantly, and you can see why everyone is so excited by the quality of the whites, they have great concentration and lots of mineral drive. A spectacular village Chassagne Montrachet, lovely earthy character true Chassagne. The 1ers Crus all expressing their unique terroirs brilliantly and the Grands Crus were epic. Le Montrachet was so composed, an extraordinary wine. I thought of the 1ers Crus, the Chenevottes was fabulous and super complex.
We then tasted with Benjamin Leroux. His wines are always such a pleasure to taste and again they didn’t disappoint. He is wonderfully articulate about the vintage and very happy with what he has produced. We tasted some delicious Meursaults, that were very driven with good focus. On the reds his Volnay 1er Cru Mitans was fabulous, wonderful concentration and great balance. Nuits St. George 1er Cru Boudots was beautiful, such a lovely wine, very enticing and alluring. The Grands Crus were so good. I loved Echezeaux and Clos de la Roche, they were very high quality.
We then headed to Savigny les Beaune where we were met by the lovely Natalie Tollot. She has definitely made wines that are going to be so enjoyable to drink. The Chorey les Beaune is one of the best vintages that I have tasted from her. Her Aloxe Corton 1er Cru Vercots was very expressive, lovely ripe red berried fruits with plenty of minerality coming though.
We had quite an afternoon in Vosne Romanee, tasting firstly at Meo Camuzet and then Grivot. Both these Domaines were extremely impressive. Jean Nicolas Meo took us through his wines, starting with his Bourgogne Rouge, which is definitely a step up in quality from past vintages. Then some very impressive 1er Cru Vosne Romanees, but I loved his Clos Vougeot, it has done very well, the Richebourg wasn’t too bad either.
At Domaine Grivot were were met by Etienne who took us into his cellars. Matilde came down with her new baby daughter who couldn’t stop smiling, probably all the Pinot Noir she has been drip fed. Their wines had lots of concentration and wonderful freshness. The Nuits St Georges Lavieres was lovely and succulent with pretty red fruits. The Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Rouge beautifully elegant and 1er Cru Boudots as usual was really good. Fabulous going though the different VR 1ers Crus. On the Grands Crus, the Echezeaux was very uplifting, a beautiful wine.
It was a long day, but our last visit was at Domaine Boillot and Domaine Barthod. Two excellent Domaines. Louis’ wines were very juicy but lovely and precise, with great freshness on the finish. His Gevrey Chambertin Evocelles was particularly good, with lots of concentration and drive. All Ghislaine’s wine were showing beautifully. A stunning Bourgogne Rouge, my favorite Chambolle 1er Cru was her Gruenchers, very expressive lovely minerality but all the wines were seriously good.
We also managed to taste their Moulin a Vent estate again some interesting wines. Definitely a place of focus due to the high land prices in Burgundy.
