Despite its excellent position perched above the cluster of grands crus, lying alongside Les Preuses, Vaulorent remains a relatively unknown premier cru. It tends to have the weight and power of its grands crus neighbours, but with more open, upfront fruit. Billaud Simon’s 2015 is a great example of this, where the rich weight of fruit has an ample volume and smooth, creamy charm.

Nicolas Potel is an alchemist of Pinot Noir, and his winemaking style is as consistent as it is brilliant. It was a rarity indeed to have any Volnay at all in 2012 so badly was it hit by hail. But these old vines escaped the worst, and this cuvée hits the sweet spot. It has an easy style with light velvety tannins and gentle damson and plum fruits, encapsulating the inimitable Volnay character.

ADIEU PATRICK MAROTEAUX
It is with sadness that we report that Patrick Maroteaux, owner of 4ème Cru Château Branaire–Ducru for the past three decades, has died having lost his battle with cancer. Patrick was the President of the Union des Grands Crus from 2000 to 2008 and according to Sylvie Cazes of Château Chauvin, “He was always a source of strength, wisdom and vision who really thought about how to help the entire region.”
COLGIN CELLARS SOLD TO LVMH
