Champagne Paul Goerg

Matthew Jukes has given our two house Champagnes from Paul Goerg a rave review on his excellent website matthewjukes.com: "If you have never tasted these wines before, you will find them unnervingly accurate and extraordinarily good value, too. With flavours more readily associated with wines twice the price, this discreet house, with its exemplary standards of grape-growing and wine-making, has worked its way onto the tables and into the cellars of many of the most discerning palates in the world."

  • Goedhuis, July 2017

This 100% Chardonnay sourced from the premier cru vineyards around Vertus in the Côte des Blancs is a step up in refinement and complexity and shows off the Goerg group’s skill in the cellar. Brilliant pale lemon yellow with a fine, persistent mousse. Classical Blanc de Blancs characteristics of citrus, orchard fruit, and brioche fill the glass. The palate has a satisfying creamy texture. This modestly priced Blanc de Blancs offers length, breadth and complexity.

  • James Suckling, September 2019, Score: 92

This has a reductive, flinty edge with a super fine and fresh array of limes and lemons and attractive honey and white-mushroom, autolysis notes. The palate has such chalky texture and a super smooth, supple and elegant shape. Nice, dry finish. Drink now.

  • Decanter, June 2019, Score: 92

Attractive lemon mineral and roasted nut aromas, with a bready character and plenty of personality on the palate. Bright, zesty fruit, and a good finish.

  • Matthew Jukes, October 2021

The drama is ratcheted up a few degrees with this pure Chardonnay model. With perfect balance, matching crystalline fruit with an unnerving crispness, and a discreet, chalky scouring of the palate offset with faint wildflower tones, this wine possesses the magical charm of a thoroughbred Côtes de Blanc classic. Superbly classy and ravishingly adroit, if you are a fan of rapier-sharp Chardonnay dressed in exquisite citrus and floral finery, this wine is for you.

Valentine’s Day calls for an exquisite rosé Champagne. Paul Goerg is our house Champagne and produce some of the most approachable and expressive wines we have ever tasted. We recently discovered their delicious rosé which couldn’t be more delicious, or romantic. Soft rose petal pink in colour, it has a high proportion of Chardonnay in the blend (85%) which gives a luxurious creamy feel. It caresses the palate with its pleasing floral notes, red berry fruits and brioche. A beautiful wine at a particularly great price that will work well with most foods.

  • Goedhuis, August 2020

Our new house Champagne Paul Goerg Premier Cru Brut Tradition, is a wonderfully vibrant cuvée which focuses on Chardonnay, for which the village of Vertus is famous for. The blend is 60% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir. It has an additional period sur lattes allowing for a minimum of 3 years before disgorgement and a further 6 months before release for sale, resulting in a finer and more complex style.

Lovely, open and gentle, with superb texture and bitingly fresh finish, this is a thrilling wine with invigorating tension under a diaphanous palate. The epitome of a Côte des Blancs classic, the tender nose, crisp middle and zesty finish make it an easy to fall for and one that is difficult to put down. With a price more suited to the High Street than an elite merchant, this is magnificent Champagne.
