Château de Fuissé | A new Mâconnais Discovery

Today, we are delighted to introduce a new gem from the treasure chest of Burgundy: the sensational 2022 vintage from Château de Fuissé. Based in the heart of the village of Fuissé, this 15th century property is unquestionably the flagship domaine for the wines of Pouilly Fussé and Saint Veran, run by the Vincent family since the 1860s. Now in the hands of 5th generation Antoine, the Vincents are masters of their craft. Known as Chardonnay specialists par excellence, they focus on the finest terroir that the Mâcon offers, covering five of the region’s fine appellations.

The estate has an enviable 8 hectares of Saint Veran under vine, the majority of which is in the northern part of the appellation around Davayé. Antoine’s policy of vinifying in stainless steel allows purity and freshness to be the focus of this fine cuvée. A shimmering combination of lemon yellow and lime green tinge in colour, it leaps from the glass with its aromatic scent of freshly peeled clementine. A gracious and pure palate focusing on subtle Chardonnay charm and a rewarding lift of mineral freshness and a deliciously mouthwatering finish.

This is a substantial cuvée of 120,000 bottles, made in barrel except for the schist and clay components. Overall, 60% is in wood, of which 25% is new. The wood element is taken out of barrel in the summer, kept on lees, then all assembled after the harvest without lees, and bottled in December. Clear mid yellow. There is useful tension here along with the flesh of a fine Pouilly-Fuissé in a good vintage. Touch of vanilla from the wood, excellent length. Fine keeping potential. 13.5% Drink from 2026-2032.

The estate’s flagship Pouilly Fuissé cuvée. The core of its fruit is sourced from a patchwork quilt of 40 different parcels within the centrally located village of Fuissé, composed of a combination clay, marl and limestone. Individual vinification with 70% of the fruit fermented in oak and 30% stainless steel allows Antoine to respect each of the locations before blending to make a wine which is the epitome of the appellation. Striking citrus fruit aromas and hints of kumquat. The palate carefully builds in its subtlety and creamy texture, combining a degree of restraint alongside the characteristic richness and exuberance that is a hallmark of a fine Pouilly-Fuissé. Its finish of panna cotta and hazelnuts is both warming and rewarding.

The soil of Le Clos is a mix of clay below and limestone above, and the wine is made in 100% new wood – yet I can barely discern it at all on the nose. A little deeper in colour. Quite discreet at the first then builds extremely well on the palate, with a perfumed but not muscatty note at the back. Elegance and intensity with a really lovely finish. 14% alcohol, bottled in December 2023. Drink from 2027-2035.

An extraordinary walled monopole vineyard that has formed part of the Chateau since the 15th century, covering 2.7 hectares. This easterly exposed vineyard sitting at an altitude of 295 metres has three different soil compositions, mixing clay, brown marl and white flinty Bathonian limestone, with its vineyards averaging 40 – 90 years of age, the oldest of which were planted by Antoine’s grandfather in 1929. The depth and quality of the fruit coming from this vineyard allows for classic 100% barrel vinification, with a high proportion of new oak. Golden straw colour, this wine exudes confidence, with aromas of warm brioche and almonds. Powerfully intense, it has all the density and concentration of a great wine, building on the palate as the depth of creamy texture and notes of fresh spice coat the palate. So, so long on the finish, this is White Burgundy at its absolute best!
