En Primeur | Puligny Montrachet

Puligny Montrachet is known as the most delicate of the white wine appellations south of Beaune. Its wines tend to be linear and mineral offering delicate floral and orchard fruit aromatics. Its village and premier cru vineyard area total slightly over 200 hectares but almost half of them are Premier Cru making them one of the highest proportions of quality vineyards in the Côte de Beaune.

Two hectares of village Puligny from a selection of 7 vineyard locations makes for a super representation of the commune’s wine. The nose is one of lively citrus, with aromas of blood orange and fresh pink grapefruit. At its core, there is a straight and direct line of minerality which is softened by sweet ripe peach fruitiness. The complexity of this wine far outweighs its village status.

I have already reported on JMB’s stunning 2024s in Wednesday Wines Edition 290 (link here), but back then, I didn’t know the prices. Now I can calculate that this wine will cost around £63, it is a standout in the more expensive reaches, without tipping over into the likes of 2024 1er Cru Les Referts (£425 IB per 6), which is another jaw-dropping wine. There is not much stock to go around, so get in NOW.

Shimmering lemon and lime hue. Charming aromatics, with a honeyed scent of glazed pears. A graceful first impression, silky in nature, flowing across the palate. Flavours of panna cotta and subtle mandarin undertones. Gracious with a light lift of acidity on the finish.

From 40-year-old vines, this a fresh, bright zesty Puligny, which comes from seven different lieux dits starting on the Meursault side, some in the middle of the village and the final plot close to Chassagne so a very complete example of the commune. A charming mandarin-scented nose. Honeyed and poised, with a glossy clarity. Refreshing and persistent. The perfect expression of village Puligny Montrachet.

  • JMO, October 2025, Score: 89-91

As is usual, the village Puligny has not yet been fully assembled, so we tasted its component parts, now in their various tanks. The first tank is quite exotically perfumed, lime blossom too, fresh and with good acidity, with a softer charm to the fruit behind. The second shows a lime tint to the colour, less exotic fruit, fresh apples, a little more density. The third tank hasn’t fallen clear yet, so crisply reductive, before a pure orchard fruit behind. A little more substance overall. Good length here. The fourth also not quite clear., showing the most weight to the nose, and indeed body on the palate. Overall, this should be an attractive and even reasonably substantial Puligny, which will be accessible quite early. Drink from 2027-2030.

The vineyard’s close proximity to Meursault shines through in the naturally exuberant nature of this wine. A combination of clotted cream, pannacotta and lime zest lift all the aromatic sensations. Despite all the richness and generosity, it has a noticeable tension and underlying core of muscle. The finish is gorgeously hedonistic, with notes of buttered croissant and hazelnut and fabulous length.

Les Referts is Puligny Montrachet’s last Premier Cru before you arrive in the commune of Meursault. Its clay and marl soils are more akin to its neighbour, and therefore makes a bolder style of Puligny, whilst retaining a purity and citrus zest which is tantalising. So floral and mineral with scents of acacia and a salty breeze. Orange zest and stone fruit characters lend body to the wine, and a strict mineral finish ensures there is no mistaking its provenance. Such a delicious cuvée.

La Truffière is one of two Premiers Crus Bruno owns in Puligny Montrachet. Situated just below the hamlet of Blagny, it takes its name from the Burgundy truffle which flourished here historically when vines were less prolific and profitable. Graceful and silky with honeysuckle scent and a honeyed velvety texture. Beautifully pure and, whilst it has a sweet, caramelised sensation, it is so refreshing with a cool tangy lift at the end.
