Le Volte dell'Ornellaia 2021

One of our drinking wines of the year hits the market today: 2021 Le Volte dell'Ornellaia. It comes with an enthusiastic Goedhuis 'stamp of approval' after last week's team tasting and, if it isn't already, we are confident it will fast become your go-to House Red. This younger sibling of Super Tuscan royalty has become a superstar in its own right and is one of the top value Italian buys of the 2021 vintage, coming in at less than £24/btl all in.

  • Goedhuis, May 2023

Crafted with the same attention to detail as its famed compatriot, the 2021 Le Serre Nuove is a tried-and-tested blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a drop of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. From morello cherry and blackberry to cinnamon and cloves, the nose is a delightful combination of dark fruits and exotic spices, while the Mediterranean influence is at the forefront of the palate with its mouth-watering black olive. The 2021 Le Serre Nuove is such a serious wine, backed with impressive structure and a core of pristine fruit all the while retaining the vintage’s signature bright acidity and freshness. There is an elegance and poise to this wine that is indicative of a truly superb vintage. Magnificently done. Drink 2025-2035.

The 2021 Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia packs a huge punch. Masses of dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate, leather, licorice and cloves saturate the palate. I don't remember a Serre Nuove with this much sheer power and somber intensity, but the balance is there, especially with aeration. It will be interesting to see how the 2021 develops. Today it is quite the powerhouse. Drink 2025-2036.

  • Wine Advocate, May 2023, Score: 93

The 2021 Bolgheri Rosso Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia is a nicely extracted and rich blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This vintage is very generous, even opulent, with dark fruit that is framed by exotic spice, baking chocolate and softly toasted tones from French oak. The wine ends on a creamy note with vanilla and cinnamon. The oak needs a few more years to integrate. Drink 2024-2033.

  • Antonio Galloni, February 2024, Score: 99

The 2021 Ornellaia captures all the magic of this sensational vintage on the Tuscan Coast. Rich, ample and expansive, with tremendous polish, the 2021 is pure class. Dark-toned fruit, mocha, espresso, licorice, plum and dried herbs abound. The tannins are present but also beautifully integrated, as is the French oak. There was a time not too long ago when young wines here needed years in bottle to drink well. That's not at all the case with the 2021. The blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot works so well. New oak was 70%. Drink 2027-2051.

Aromas of blackcurrants, iodine, crushed stone, hints of mint and sage. Blue fruits. Full-bodied with chewy tannins that open with air. It’s racy and very long. Very tannin driven and energetic with power and focus. Muscular and very toned. This is the best Ornellaia for the cellar in years. Try after 2030.

  • Monica Larner, February 2024, Score: 96

The Ornellaia 2021 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia offers an extra layer of richness, generosity and plushness that shapes a very open-knit and exuberant Tuscan red. The blend is 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot. You feel the fruit and oak weight of the wine, the extract and the 15% alcohol content. All of these elements come together to big effect. From that power, you get black cherry, dark fruit, sweet spice and barbecue smoke. The fruit tannins are young, and this edition of Ornellaia proves worthy for medium or long-term drinking, especially as it softens up with more bottle age. Drink 2026-2050.

  • Goedhuis, February 2024

A rare gem, Ornellaia Bianco is produced in tiny quantities. The 2021 is 100% Sauvignon Blanc and thanks to a change in regulations, it can now be classified as a DOC rather than IGT. Broad in complexity, lemon balm, mango, chamomile, hay, fresh almonds and hazelnuts are just some of the flavours that we find in this exquisite 2021. A beautiful balancing act, a bright, cleansing acidity on the palate cuts through the rich creamy fruit with perfect tension. The careful use of oak (25% new) gives a soft, vivid texture and it salty, mineral finish is long, aromatically intense and profoundly fresh. It will age for a good ten years.

The 2021 Ornellaia Bianco is alluring. I sense a bit more textural richness vis-à-vis prior editions, a positive in my book. White pear, jasmine, sage, mint, white pepper, peach and apricot fill out the layers. Light tropical accents appear with some aeration, adding a tropical flair that is quite attractive. This is impeccably done. Drink 2024-2029.

  • James Suckling, July 2023, Score: 99

This is a dense and focused white but agile and lightly chewy. Very pretty aromas. Full-bodied with tension and framing that gives this wine real precision and intensity. Tight at the end. April 2024 release. Already beautiful but will age wonderfully. Best white ever from here?

  • Monica Larner, July 2022, Score: 95

Previously a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier, the Ornellaia 2021 Ornellaia Bianco is now all Sauvignon Blanc. The estate recently planted Semillon, so it is possible that we will one day see that grape in the blend (especially because it is known to thrive in hot vintages). This wine plays its best cards in terms of texture. It sports broad shoulders and enough texture to support those many creamy citrus and delicately tropical flavors. A dusting of crushed stone adds elegance. The wine should show its best results in five to 10 years from now. Drink 2024-2038.

The 2021 Masseto is a stunner. It also shows how much the estate has evolved in recent years. I was reminded of that recently when I drank the 2001, considered by many observers, including this one, to be one of the greatest wines ever made here. The 2021 represents a move towards a more refined style. There’s less of the bombastic intensity and extraction that were once the norm here. I remember young vintages that were impossible to taste young. The 2021, on the other hand, is an absolute delight. Crushed flowers, spice, blood orange and bright, red-toned fruit all grace the palate. Floral aromatics and saline underpinnings are at times reminiscent of the Cabernet Franc found in the 2019 and 2020, but the 2021 is back to the classic 100% Merlot. Readers will find a Masseto built on linear energy more than volume. The 2021 is quite simply the most exquisite, refined young Masseto I have ever tasted.

Plum and blackberry flavors are wrapped in an embrace of toasty oak, with vanilla, resin and iron accents. Dense tannins coat the gums, while bright acidity keeps this focused and drives the spice-infused aftertaste. Fluid and long, this silky red ultimately is all about finesse. A superb success in a great vintage.
