Goedhuis, March 2023
Always one of the top value Italian buys of the vintage, Le Volte is a Tuscan superstar in its own right and offers a little bit of everything, the softness of Merlot, the structure and depth of Cabernet Sauvignon, and the beauty and exuberance of Tuscany’s Sangiovese. The 2021 offers mouth-watering red cherry, plum and blackberry over layers of lavender, Mediterranean herbs, cedar and fresh tobacco leaf. Bright and energetic on the palate, the tannins are soft and well-integrated, making this an immensely pleasurable wine. Instantly enjoyable, but backed up with a supple, nimble structure and crisp vibrant fruit that will allow it to age comfortably for up to five years.

The 2021 Le Volte dell’Ornellaia is a potent, brooding wine. Black cherry, gravel, dried herbs, chocolate, leather and tobacco are all amplified in this potent Maremma red. The 2021 is one of the richest Le Voltes I can remember tasting. Drink 2021-2029

The Ornellaia 2021 Le Volte dell'Ornellaia offers bright and youthful fruit with dark cherry, cassis, spice and red rose. This wine is composed of Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. You feel the acidity of the Italian grape and the rich fruit from the two French varietals. The wine is tonic and tight with mid-weight intensity. This is the entry-level red from one of Italy's most iconic estates. Drink 2023-2026

The 2021 Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia packs a huge punch. Masses of dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate, leather, licorice and cloves saturate the palate. I don't remember a Serre Nuove with this much sheer power and somber intensity, but the balance is there, especially with aeration. It will be interesting to see how the 2021 develops. Today it is quite the powerhouse. Drink 2025-2036.

The 2021 Bolgheri Rosso Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia is a nicely extracted and rich blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This vintage is very generous, even opulent, with dark fruit that is framed by exotic spice, baking chocolate and softly toasted tones from French oak. The wine ends on a creamy note with vanilla and cinnamon. The oak needs a few more years to integrate. Drink 2024-2033.
