WHAT’S NEW AND WHERE TO LOOK?

WHAT’S NEW AND WHERE TO LOOK?

Historically Burgundy’s reputation has revolved around the famous locations: from Chablis, to Meursault and Puligny Montrachet in the Côte de Beaune, from Volnay or Pommard south of Beaune to Vosne Romanée or Gevrey Chambertin north of Nuits St Georges. However as both its reputation and worldwide demand hit previously unseen levels, availability becomes ever more difficult, and prices for many are now out of reach.

With these pressures, new opportunities have arisen. As buyers we have broadened our nets and sought new, exciting, up-and-coming locations. The combination of price and climate change means formerly overlooked villages are becoming prime sources for high-quality wine at attractive prices. Despite the size of the 2021 crop, opportunities still exist, and we have used this vintage to develop our already extensive range further.

Château de Marsannay

Château de Marsannay

North of Gevrey Chambertin the village of Marsannay is not a novelty to Goedhuis customers. We introduced Cyril Audoin’s brilliant wines back in the 2012 vintage. Today Marsannay is fast being considered equal in quality to many of the revered appellations lying further south in the Côtes and no longer just a source for fine rosé. In 2021, we are delighted to strengthen our position within this fine village with the excellent wines of Ch de Marsannay. This estate is not only a source of great Marsannay but has the added advantage of some wonderful parcels in Gevrey Chambertin and Clos de Vougeot!

Domaine François Legros

Domaine François Legros

Sisters Charlotte and Laure Legros have recently succeeded their father François in managing this beautifully positioned domaine with 6.5 hectares throughout the Côte de Nuits. Their focus is in Nuits St Georges, but their vineyards spread northwards to Chambolle Musigny and Morey St Denis. This is an exciting addition encompassing some great Pinot Noir terroir.

Domaine Truchetet

Domaine Truchetet

Nuits St Georges is a well-established headline appellation, and home to a star amongst our new signings, Domaine Truchetet based in Premeaux Prissey. What is exciting is that they also have La Montagne, a vineyard up in the Hautes Côtes de Nuits which shows this appellation’s great potential. Once regarded as a high-risk vineyard area susceptible to both frost and poor ripening, today it is becoming a highly prized source of value land and high-quality Pinot Noir. What better endorsement can there be than two Vosne Romanée greats, Sebastien Cathiard and Mathias Gros, both investing in the appellation?

Domaine Rollin Père et Fils

Domaine Rollin Père et Fils

Further south in the Côte de Beaune there are similarly exciting developments. Pernand Vergelesses, whilst home to half of the hillside of Corton Charlemagne, has long been overlooked for the quality of its own white wines. In 2017 we were delighted to introduce the wines of Vincent Rapet, now joined by his son Robin for the 2021 vintage. Such is our confidence in this exciting appellation, that we have further strengthened our selection with the introduction of Domaine Rollin, a fourth generation family-run domaine with 14 hectares of vines.

Château de Meursault

Château de Meursault

Ch de Meursault is a very historical estate, with its large Cistercian cellars showing origins back to the 12th century. The domaine has 65 ha of great Cote de Nuits vineyards, with an array of Climats. Recently accredited organic in 2019 and run by the charismatic Stephane Follin-Arbelet, we have been very impressed by the direction he has taken the estate in recent years and naturally excited by their strength of great vineyard locations.

South of the town of Beaune and the village of Chassagne Montrachet we now represent two more rising appellational stars that have benefitted from the more clement summer conditions of recent decades.

Domaine Justin Girardin

The village of Santenay has a growing reputation for both white and red wines and there can be no greater ambassador for the appellation than Justin Girardin. The 2021 vintage is our fifth vintage working with him, and his wines are exemplary in every way: authenticity, quality and above all price.

Domaine Elodie Roy

Next door lies the little-known village of Cheilly-Les-Maranges, which sells its wines under the appellational name Maranges and offers the prospect of beautifully fine and pure Pinot Noir. Domaine Elodie Roy was an exciting new listing for us last year. She cut her teeth at Domaine Anne Gros in Vosne Romanée where she worked for 12 years before taking over her parent’s estate in 2019. This is a domaine to watch. Elodie’s wines have the DNA of her training ground: refined, pure and precise, but at a price tag long forgotten in the Côte de Nuits.

As we continue our search for areas offering both value and quality. The Cote Chalonnaise is very much amongst the best and for us Mercurey is a star:

Domaine Vincent Charton

This excellent Domaine is well-known to many of our customers. Since taking on the winemaking responsibilities from his father Jean-Pierre, himself a fine vigneron, Vincent hit the ground running. He was quickly nominated as the region’s Young Winemaker of the Year by his peers for his range of red wines.

Domaine Tupinier Bautista

Following a tasting at the Grands Jours de Bourgogne in spring 2021, we are delighted to strengthen our Mercurey range with the highly acclaimed wines of Domaine Tupinier Bautista. These wines offer so much youthful Pinot accessibility, whilst the finest Premiers Crus spots have the distinction to age with style.

BROWSE DOMAINE TUPINIER BAUTISTA

The white wines from the Maconnais are a source of fine Chardonnay at excellent prices. Whilst not part of our En Primeur release, the area certainly deserves a mention. The fact that Jean-Marc Boillot from Puligny Montrachet has invested in the region is testament to its potential, and the addition of Domaine Dominique Cornin in Chaintré and Domaine de Crais in St Veran highlights our confidence in the region.

There is so much to look forward to for wine drinkers and lovers of Burgundy with a relatively conservative budget in mind and our roll call of new and upcoming domaines is below:
