  • Robert Parker, April 1997, Score: 88-89

I enjoyed this wine, which was a strong effort for this property, owned by the Rothschilds of Lafite. The wine exhibits a dense purple color, a sweet, framboise, oak, and mineral-scented nose, and powerful, medium-bodied flavors with a tannic edge. The tannin is ripe and counter-balanced by the wine's pure fruit. The 1996 Duhart-Milon-Rothschild should develop into a stylish, elegant, classic Pauillac for consuming between 2004-2020.

  • Robert Parker, February 1998, Score: 88-90

From a property that appears to be benefitting from increased attention to detail, the 1996 may turn out to be the finest Duhart-Milon produced since the 1982. The 1996 displays a dense ruby/purple color, followed by a pure, mineral, plum and black currant-scented nose with some spicy oak. High tannin could prove to be troublesome, but at this stage it tastes sweet and well-integrated with the wine's flesh and fruit. This is a well-made, backward, classic Pauillac that will benefit from cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2015.

  • Robert Parker, April 1999, Score: 90

A strong case can be made that this is the finest Duhart produced since the 1982. The color is a saturated dark ruby/purple. The bouquet offers aromas of blackberry fruit intermixed with licorice, minerals, and dried herbs. Rich and intense, with considerable finesse, medium to full body, and outstanding concentration and purity, this should be a reasonably priced wine. It reflects the increased attention Lafite's administrator, Charles Chevalier, has been giving this nearby estate. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020.

  • Clive Coates, June 2001, Score: 14/20

Medium colour. Elegant but really quite softon the nose. Quite pretty on the palate. Buta lack of real depth and a little short. Onlyquite good. Forward.

Producer

Château Duhart-Milon

Owned since 1962 by the Rothschilds of Château Lafite, this wine is often overlooked. Yet it usually comes through with impressive results, its style replicating its more renowned big brother with outstanding purity and finesse.

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
