  • Goedhuis, April 2001

The third in Xavier Bories stunning trio. Very, very stylish with dark polished damsonfruit and an exquisitely poised finish. Always great value. April 2001

  • Neal Martin, June 2017, Score: 88

The 2000 Haut Batailley, served by Xavier Borie at Grand-Puy-Lacoste, showed a slight herbaceous note on the nose, accompanied by cedar and graphite aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with still quite tough tannins, foursquare in style and perhaps just missing a little persistence on the finish. As a big fan of this property, perhaps I was a little underwhelmed by this example and it was shown up by the superior 1995. Tasted July 2016 2016-2032

  • Robert Parker, April 2003, Score: 90

One of the finest Haut-Batailleys ever made (it certainly rivals the 1996), this deep ruby/purple-colored wine is a beauty. Notes of raspberries, liquified minerals, cassis, and tobacco jump from the glass of this attractive, velvety-textured wine. Some tannin is there, but it is abundantly fruity, low in acidity, and is a quintessentially elegant style of Bordeaux. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2015.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2001, Score: 17

Almost black. Very floral aromatic nose. Easy supple texture with lively chewy tannins and lots of acidity. Sappy wine with appetising lift and considerable ripeness. Likely to be good value.

  • Clive Coates, June 2001

75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot. Good colour. Slightly closed on the nose. Very lovely poised, balanced, rich fruit on the palate. Very well supported by the acidity. This confirms the progress towards a less austere Haut-Batailley made in recent years. Yet without sacrifying the Pauillaccharacter. Full, rich and balanced. Very classy. Excellent tannins. Very good indeed/fine. One of the best Haut-Batailleys ever. From 2010.

Producer

Château Haut-Batailley

Château Haut-Batailley was bought by Jean-Charles Cazes of Ch Lynch Bages in 2017 from François-Xavier Borie. It has one of the highest vine densities in Bordeaux at 10,000 vines per hectare, and holds a superb location, neighbouring Chx Lynch Bages, Latour and Pichon Lalande.

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
