Its vineyards are some of the highest in Margaux and its wines are generally high toned and stylish. This 2003, while showing the concentration and power of the vintage, retains that style and is a wine of great verve and poise. It is perhaps the 25% Cabernet Franc that has made this wine so classy, helped by 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot.

    This dark ruby/purple-colored, luscious, soft, already complex 2003 offers alluring notes of smoked herbs, black cherry jam, camphor, white chocolate, and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, silky-textured, heady, and impossible to resist, it can be drunk now and over the next 12-14 years. Drink 2007-2020

    This pure, rich, dense ruby/purple-hued 2003 offers sweet aromas of wood smoke, chocolate-covered black cherries, plums, and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, seductive, and fleshy with low acidity as well as ripe tannin, it should drink well young yet age nicely for 12-15 years. Readers should be taking a serious look at this estate as recent vintages have exhibited significant improvement. Du Tertre is a stylish, full-flavored, somewhat exotic Margaux with good aging potential. Moreover, it remains reasonably priced. Drink 2005-2020

Region

Margaux

Plump, silky and seductive are the words often used to describe wines from Margaux. Because of their style, they tend to be user friendly and more approachable when young. This is in part due to its terroir which is comprised of the thinnest soil as well as the highest proportion of chunky gravel in all of the Médoc. It drains well but also is it more susceptible to vintage variation. Margaux wines tend to have the highest proportions of Merlot within the core of the Médoc further adding to their ample roundness and openness. Margaux is home to the largest number of classified growths including its namesake first growth, Château Margaux, as well as third growths, Palmer and d'Issan.
