  • Goedhuis, April 2004

We have been a little disappointed with Lafon Rochet over the last couple of vintages, but the 2003 is a stunner. Intensely mineral, dark and tight knit, this will explode into life in 7 years or so. Graceful and serious it will age beautifully.

  • Robert Parker, August 2014, Score: 89

Fully mature, round, soft and reasonably complex, the 2003 Lafon Rochet exhibits notes of cedarwood, licorice, Christmas fruitcake, red and black fruits. The tannins are resolved in this medium-bodied, low acid St.-Estephe, so enjoy it over the next 4-5 years.

  • Robert Parker, April 2006, Score: 90

A sleeper of the vintage, the dense blue/purple-colored 2003 Lafon-Rochet exhibits plenty of blackberry, cassis and graphite along with a touch of toasty new oak. The wine is more backward than expected, but it possesses full-bodied, concentrated flavors as well as good elegance, purity, and overall equilibrium. This is a long-distance runner. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025.

  • Robert Parker, April 2005, Score: 88-90

Surprisingly soft, this deep purple-colored 2003 reveals sweet curranty fruit aromas intermixed with dried herbs, licorice, and incense. The wine boasts excellent density, a fleshy attack, medium body, and a supple finish. If it develops more grip, its definition will improve and it may merit an outstanding rating. While concentration and density are present, it just seems extremely soft. Anticipated maturity: now-2015+.

  • James Suckling, April 2004, Score: 89-91

Wild and exotic wine with blackberry and light jam character. Big and juicy. Full-bodied and long. Velvety. 10,555 cases made. -- J.S.

  • Decanter, April 2004

Huge colour, big, extracted fruit, lots of florality and fragrance behind the superb Cabernet Sauvignon firmness, really good structure, the essence of St-Estephe. Drink: 2010-2030.

Ch Lafon Rochet is ideally situated due northwest of Lafite and west of Cos d'Estournel. Though its terroir is exceptional, many critics believed that earlier vintages in the 1970s and 1980s were too tannic and lacked charm. Since the 1990s, it has steadily improved due to several factors such as harvesting later, increasing the amount of new oak and using a higher percentage of Merlot in the blend - a trend which has a strong following in St Estèphe at the moment. From 1960-2021, the property was managed by three generations of the Tesseron family, and is now under the ownership of the Lorenzetti family, bringing into the Vignobles Cruzes-Lorenzetti portfolio alongside Ch d'Issan and Lilian Ladouys. In 2025, Vincent Bache-Gabrielsen has taken over after managing at Pédesclaux, swapping roles with incumbant Managing Director Christophe Congé, who is heading back to Pauillac to manage Pédesclaux.Read less

Region

St Estèphe

St Estèphe is the most northern of Médoc communal crus. Its unique terroir is made up of layers of gravel which are supported by a dense clay base. This subsoil retains water in dry seasons and works particularly well with Merlot, a largely planted variety which is used to flesh out Cabernet Sauvignon. This clay base also creates powerful, textured tannins which enable St Estèphe to stand out from the pack. Like St Julien, it is one of the four most important communal appellations of the Médoc which does not contain any first growths, despite its southern border being a stone'sthrow from Château Lafite. Nonetheless, it is home to some excellent châteaux making fine wines such as Cos d'Estournel, Montrose, Calon Ségur and Lafon Rochet.
